El estudio se basa en data empírica colectada en Lima entre los meses de marzo y julio del 2018. La metodología mixta incluyó elementos cualitativos y cuantitativos. Los participantes fueron niños de 8-11 años y adolescentes de 12-16 años, reclutados en diversas áreas geográficas de la ciudad y procedentes de diversos NSE. Como resultado, la tesis plantea 4 resultados empíricos: (1) La felicidad de niños y adolescentes en Lima puede ser conceptualizada fundamentalmente como una experiencia social. (2) Las experiencias de felicidad urbana de niños y adolescentes están mediadas por cuatro variables urbanas – sociabilidad, accesibilidad, seguridad y calidad ambiental. (3) Los espacios urbanos que proveen experiencias de felicidad incluyen parques, áreas deportivas, calles y espacios comerciales; y (4) La felicidad urbana de niños y adolescentes esta moderada por su contexto residencial. El estudio provee una perspectiva valiosa de la infancia urbana en la región que resulta relevante para el ámbito del urbanismo y políticas sociales.

Thus, it discusses the role of the city in terms of the physical environment and the emotional attachment to it. To do so, it employed a multi-methodological research programme conducted in Lima, Peru, between the months of March and July 2018. As a result, the thesis provides four key empirical findings: (1) Children’s and adolescents’ happiness can be conceptualised as fundamentally social, cutting across through all aspects of their everyday lives. (2) Children’s and adolescents’ experiences of urban happiness are likely to be mediated by four urban variables - sociability, accessibility, safety, and environmental quality. (3) Urban spaces, providing experiences of happiness included parks, sport areas, streets, commercial and worshipping spaces; and (4) children’s and adolescent’s happiness in the city appeared to be moderated by context. the study provided a valuable perspective on the region and the significance of levels of affluence, yielding insights for policy makers and urban practitioners seeking to translate happiness into urban policy and practice.
