La estabilidad de las funciones orofaciales tales como succión, respiración, masticación, deglución y habla está directamente relacionada con la forma de las estructuras estomatognáticas, de tal manera que cualquier alteración en dichas estructuras puede interrumpir la correcta función de las mismas. Las maloclusiones dentarias, según su severidad, pueden ocasionar alteraciones en las funciones orofaciales y una de ellas es la mordida abierta anterior. La investigación tiene como objetivo describir las características funcionales orofaciales en un grupo de pacientes entre 12 y 29 años de edad que acudieron a una clínica de ortodoncia universitaria durante el año 2014 para corregir su maloclusión dentaria. El protocolo MBGR traducido al Español por el equipo de habla de CPAL en el 2013 fue utilizado para evaluar las funciones orofaciales. La respiración medio/inferior fue predominante y sólo el 36.36% presentó respiración oronasal. Al evaluar la masticación, el 36.36% de los pacientes de Clase II-1 y Clase III realizaron la incisión de pan con premolares y/o caninos. Predominó el patrón masticatorio unilateral preferencial y el bilateral alternado. El 27.27% realizó la deglución dirigida de agua con proyección anterior de la lengua y el 54.55% con contracción del orbicular de los labios y mentual debido a la discrepancia maxilo mandibular. En el habla espontánea se encontró alteración sistemática principalmente en el fon /s/ por posición interdental anterior de la lengua, y en los fones /r/, / br/ y /tr/ por poca vibración del ápice lingual. |

Dental malocclusions, according to their severity, may disturb orofacial functions and one of these features is the anterior open bite. The aim of this study is to describe the features of the orofacial functions on a group of patients, aged 12 to 29 years, who went to an orthodontic university clinic during the year 2014 looking for the correction of their malocclusion. The MBGR protocol translated into Spanish by CPAL’s speech team on 2013 was applied to assess the orofacial functions. Diafragmatic respiration was found in 100% of the cases and only 36.36% had an oronasal breathing. For the purpose of mastication evaluation, 36.36% of Class II-1 and Class III with anterior open bite did the first bite of bread using bicuspids and/or canines. The unilateral preferential and bilateral alternate masticatory patterns were predominated. The 27.27% performed the ordered swallowing of water with an anterior tongue projection and the 54.55% with the contraction of orbicularis oris and chin muscles, because of the maxilla and mandible discrepancy.
