Partiendo de la premisa histórica de que las leyes físicas de Newton, en particular la teoría de la gravitación universal, constituyeron la consolidación de una nueva forma de entender el quehacer científico en el continente europeo, esta tesis estudia la forma en cómo los hombres de letras, intelectuales y científicos afincados en el Perú reaccionaron frente a la introducción de este nuevo paradigma científico. A partir de la lectura de la fuentes, en este trabajo se sostiene que la nueva física newtoniana dividió a la comunidad científica en tres bandos: un sector conservador que rechazó a Newton e impuso obstáculos frente a su apropiación; un segundo grupo que asimiló a Newton buscando extender y difundir sus enseñanzas; y un tercer bando que se posicionó eclécticamente, conciliando lo mejor de la filosofía antigua con lo novedoso y útil de la moderna. Por último, se sostiene que los debates newtonianos no pasaron desapercibidos entre los letrados. Por el contrario, encendió pasiones entre los protagonistas y el despliegue de un lenguaje retórico destinado a hacer prevalecer algunas de las posiciones adoptadas. El resultado final, tanto el éxito o el fracaso de introducir la física newtoniana, dependió del área de aplicación o del espacio de discusión.

El resultado final, tanto el éxito o el fracaso de introducir la física newtoniana, dependió del área de aplicación o del espacio de discusión.This research examines the progressive exposure of the Peruvian intellectual elite to Newton’s ideas on Physics in the last third of the 18th century in the Viceroyalty of Peru. Based on the historical premise that Newton's physical laws, particularly the theory of universal gravitation, consolidated a new way of understanding scientific endeavors within the European continent, this thesis studies how men of letters, intellectuals, and scientists in Peru reacted to the introduction of this new scientific paradigm. Drawing from primary sources, it’s argued that Newton's new physics divided the scientific community into three factions: a conservative sector that rejected Newton and imposed obstacles to its appropriation; a second group that assimilated Newton and sought to extend and disseminate his teachings; and a third faction that positioned itself eclectically, reconciling the best of ancient philosophy of science with the novel and useful aspects of the modern. Finally, it is argued that Newtonian debates did not go unnoticed among the men of letters. On the contrary, it ignited passions among the protagonists and the deployment of a rhetorical language aimed at prevailing in some of the adopted positions.
