En las visitas de atención primaria en el Centro de Salud de Huayllay se examinaron 583 niños de 5 a 16 años, de los cuales 386 se incluyeron en este estudio, se recogieron datos básicos sociodemográficos y se evaluaron tres resultados: saturación arterial de oxígeno con un oxímetro de pulso, frecuencia cardíaca y frecuencia respiratoria. Huayllay es una comunidad rural ubicada a 4340 m. sobre el nivel del mar en la provincia de Pasco, en los andes peruanos. Los resultados del estudio sugieren que a 4300 m. los valores de referencia para hipoxia deben ser 14.2% más bajos que a nivel del mar y deben ser considerados cuando se diagnostica neumonía o se decide prescribir suplementación de oxígeno en altitud, pero los autores indican que son necesarios más estudios similares para confirmar los valores.
