description Se actualizan los conocimientos fisiológicos, indicaciones, técnicas de inserción, beneficios y riesgos potenciales de la cateterización de la arteria pulmonar (AP), que se precisa conocer antes de realizar este procedimiento invasivo y que sea de utilidad tanto para el iniciado como para el experto. Con este propósito se realizó la búsqueda bibliográfica sobre el tópico mediante MEDLINE, artículos de revisión y textos especializados. El monitoreo hemodinámico es esencial en el manejo de pacientes críticos, sometidos a cirugía cardíaca y pacientes con otras enfermedades, tales como infarto de miocardio, sepsis, trauma multisistémico, shock, insuficiencia renal aguda, etc. En esencia, el monitoreo hemodinámico tiene cuatro objetivos centrales: (1) Evaluar la función ventricular derecha y/o izquierda. (2) Monitorizar los cambios en el status hemodinámico. (3) Guiar el tratamiento con agentes farmacológicos y no farmacológicos. (4) Proveer información pronóstica.
