Some authors think autocracies, unlike democracies, can follow economic policies that promote private investment and economic growth, without being influenced by demands of some lobbies, which pretend to mantain and expand their privilegies. Odria's autocracy (1948-1956) seems to be an example of the autocratic advantage. During Odria's government, concentration of political power permitted Odria to pursue an ortodox economic program and promote privte investment on mining and exporting agriculture. However, those policies were possible because the lobbies very close to the government in those years (exporters) promoted such policies. If the most powerful lobbies had demanded protectionist policies, economic policies would have been totally different. On the other hand, even though at the beginning of his government, Odria could impose a liberal economic program, along the years he had t...

This article relies on linear programming to calculate the extreme poverty line between 1913 and 1925. Using several sources, I estimate the minimum amount of income that a family had to earn in order to afford its basic feeding needs. Our estimations indicate that the minimum basket of foodstuff was afforded with a little more than a sol per day before the First World War, and that the cost of such basket increased to more than twice toward the end of the war. A comparison with the salaries of the period indicates that in Lima a large number of workers could afford the basket of basic foodstuff of their families, especially if more than one member of the family received wages; but that such ability largely declined by the end of the 1910s

Despite the growing literature on bank efficiency worldwide over the last decade, researchers have neglected the Peruvian banking sector. In this paper, the technique of data envelopment analysis (DEA) is used to investigate the efficiency of Peruvian banks for the period 2000 to 2009 to benchmark currently existing banks based on their super-efficiency scores over time. Further, an in-depth analysis of currently existing banks for the period 2008 to 2009 is conducted to check the robustness of DEA efficiency scores and the potential improvement of inputs and outputs for inefficient banks, indicating by how much and in what areas inefficient banks need to improve in order to be efficient. Our finding shows an increasing trend in technical efficiency during the period 2000 to 2009 which gives an indication of an affirmative effect of the reform process in the Peruvian banking sector. On a...
