OBJECTIVES: Introductory study of contraceptive monthly deposit, 25 mg of medroxyprogesterone acetate (AM) plus 5 mg estradiol cypionate (EC), the National Hospital Cayetano Heredia, to assess their effectiveness, continuity and reasons for discontinuation. DESIGN: Prospective, longitudinal descriptive of 159 women who would come to the family planning clinic and after counseling voluntarily chose AM + CE for contraception. They were given one injection every 30 days and were followed up for two years, evaluating the efficacy and side effects. For data analysis a life table was used. RESULTS: No pregnancies were observed. The most common side effects were irregular pattern of monthly bleeding, amenorrhea, headache and nausea. The rate of continuing the second year was 43.3 and causes of discontinuation included bleeding, amenorrhea, medical reasons and the desire of pregnancy. CONCLUSION...

Retrospective partial longitudinal comparative, observational study that evaluates 2155 newborns from a total of 18808 delivered between January 1984 and December 1987 at Cayetano Heredia National Hospital. Incidence of preterm newborns was 4,92% and of low birth weight 7,4%; 4,7% were preterm low weight newborns. Risk of preterm low weight is influenced by demographic factors (parity, educational degrees), maternal past history (bad obstetrical history, prematurity, toxemia, and hypertension) and complications of current pregnancy. Important pregnancy associated medical complications were malnutrition, anemia and intercurrent infections. Preterm low weight newborns are associated to higher risk pregnancies, no prenatal control, severe neonatal hypoxia, and higher morbidity and mortality rates.

Puerperal infection is a serious problem for any hospital department of Obstetrics, because it's very important cause of maternal morbidity and mortality, it prolongs hospital stay, increasing the use of expensive drugs and requires care specialists. Women with postpartum fever in need of intensive and systematic assessment, trying to make an early diagnosis to quickly administer treatment.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the usefulness of sonohysterosalpingograpby in the diagnosis of the uterine cavity and tubalpatency. MATERIAL: Prospective study of 76 women with diagnosis of abnormal endometrium infertility. RESULTS: Sonohysterosalpingography is a good method for the diagnosis of polyps, submucosus or intramural myomas. It is a good, fast, low cost ambulatory procedure.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency, diagnosis and management of hyperemesis gravidarum. DlSEÑO observational descriptive retrospective study. LOCATION: Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics Hospital Cayetano Heredia between January 1994 and December 1997. SUBJECTS: One hundred twenty-six patients. RESULTS: a frequency of 0.7% in the study period, was found half the patients (52.4%) were nulliparous, 13.5% reported having presented hyperemesis in previous pregnancies, pregnancy was not desired at 19 %, it required to be readmitted 12.7%. In 59.5% he corresponded to mild hyperemesis gravidarum and 40.5% for hyperemesis gravidarum with metabolic disorders. In treating the most widely used drug metoclopramide was 84, 1% of cases. The most common complication was dehydration (40.5%), three cases of Wernicke encephalopathy was found, no recorded cases of kidney failure or maternal death...

Retrospective study of 1033 ultrasound examinations done at Cayetano Heredia National Hospital during 28 months to evaluate the relationship between the diagnosis of polihydramnios done in 20% (9/45) of newborns with any congenital anomaly was significatively greater than that found in 0,81% (8/988) of normal newborns (p < 0,001). Fifty-three percent of pregnancies with polyhydramnios was associated with a newborn with any congenital anomaly. This suggest that any pregnancy complicated with polihydramnios needs a careful ultrasound examination to discard congenital anomalies.

Retrospective study Cayetano Heredia National Hospital between January 1991 and April 1993 in 972 products evaluated by ultrasound. The objective was to determine the accuracy of ultrasound level performed in the second trimester, in the detection of neural tube defects in the general population. To do ultrasound findings correlate with the clinical evaluation of the newborn. A detection rate of neural tube defects in 90% (96/100), specificity of 99.6% (958/964) false positive rate of 30% (4113) and false negative rate of 0.1 was found % (1959). 100% of anencephaly is detected.
