Cardiotoxicity is a relatively new clinical entity which, in the case of heart failure, is a marker of poor prognosis in cancer survivors who have received more frequent treatments with anthracyclines or trastuzumab. In these patients, detecting a cardiac dysfunction in the subclinical stage can reveal early myocardial involvement and avoid further damage to the heart. Technological advances in imaging, such as the global longitudinal strain, and the increase in troponin I enable the detection of this condition. This case report involves a 17-year-old female patient who was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her left leg and received anthracyclines. In the cardiovascular evaluation, she was asymptomatic, and showed normal left ventricular function (60 %), decreased strain rate (-15 %) and elevated troponin I levels (115 ng/mL). Asymptomatic cardiac dysfunction was diagnosed and carvedilol 6....

Objective: To report the frequency of cardiac adverse effects (cardiotoxicity) induced by chemotherapy in patients of the Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Neoplásicas during the period 2012-2016. Materials and methods: The study had a non-experimental, descriptive and retrospective design. The study population consisted of patients treated at the Cardiology Service due to cardiovascular discomfort during chemotherapy. Results: Nine hundred eighty-five (985) evaluations were performed because of cardiac symptoms in patients undergoing antineoplastic treatment. Among the oncological treatment-related cardiovascular adverse effects, cardiac arrhythmias were the most frequent ones (41.2%), episodes of angina pectoris were in the second place with 18.7%, and heart failure had a frequency of 4.9%. The most frequent arrhythmia was sinus bradycardia (55.9%), followed by symptomatic sinus tach...

Cardiac amyloidosis is a rare clinical entity and, therefore, almost unknown. It shows as a restrictive cardiomyopathy, since it is an infiltrative disease caused by the extracellular deposition of amyloids in the cardiac wall. Although it may be systemic, the heart condition determines its poor prognosis. This is the case of a 38-year-old patient who was admitted for dyspnea and severe fatigue. He was diagnosed with IgA multiple myeloma, lambda light chains, clinical stage IIIB, and initiated treatment with cyclophosphamide, thalidomide and dexamethasone. The patient stopped the treatment, and returned after one year and 2 months with an advanced disease and presence of amyloidosis. The patient progressed torpidly and eventually died. A review of the medical literature is performed concerning amyloidosis types, physiopathology, diagnostic methods and treatment.

Objetive: Cardiovascular diseases that every year have more prevalence in the country, are the product of risky factors, many of them modifiable and preventable. The objective of the present study has been to know and analyze the factors of cardiovascular risk and determine the vascular age in the population of Lima. Material and methods: A descriptive cross sectional study, carried out in March 2016, in the southern, northern and eastern cones of Metropolitan Lima, in people older than 30 and younger than 75 years old. The survey structured for the study collected the following variables: gender, age, arterial hypertension, smoking, diabetes, physical activity and type of diet. Objective: In Peru, the 80 year old and older population is increasing and cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death. The aim of the study was to analyze the cardiovascular risk factors in octogenarians. Material and Methods: This is a descriptive, observational, cross prevalence research, conducted in March 2015 in Lima. Aquestionnaire on cardiovascular risk factors was used; blood pressure, weight, height and body mass index, in people 80 years of age or older. Results: 969 subjects were evaluated, of whom 562 (58%) were women and 407 (42%) were male; with an average age of84.2 years; predominant age group of 80-84years 60.5%. 427 cases were hypertensive (44.1%), this was more common in women (62.2%).9% of the study population (87 cases) were smokers; being more common in men (64%) (p = 0.000009). 220 subjects (22.7%) with hypercholesterolemia were registered, this being m...

Objetive: Determine in a population of non-smokers, smokers and former-smokers, the level of knowledge of the health risks that smoking generate. Material and Methods: An epidemiological, observational, descriptive and cross-sectional research, was conducted in September 2015 in the city of Lima and Callao. Asurvey of over 18 was applied. Participants were divided into three groups, smokers, former-smokers and non-smokers. Results: The study included 2270 subjects, 744 were smokers, 752 former-smokers and 774 non-smokers. The group that mostly associated the tobacco to many diseases was the group of former-smokers, 53.8% of them mentioned to lung cancer as the most common disease related to tobacco. The non-smokers was the group that knows less often the risks of smoking. In all three groups, the most tobacco-related disease was the lung cancer, followed by myocardial infarction, while f...

Prevention is the field that must grow in the health field of all countries, and this has been demonstrated by the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, which has caused, and continues to cause, high morbidity and mortality rates in the population, regardless of social stratum, type of passport, race, etc. Effective pharmacological treatment, which never arrived, revealed that the health systems were unable to meet the requirements of the sick. The only useful tool so far, and for a long time, is prevention. The use of masks, personal distancing and the respective rules of cleanliness are the new weapons of the 21st century that we must learn to use, both health personnel and the community.
