The study of communication, media and cultural practices in diasporic contexts gives rise to a series of theoretical and methodological challenges. The current article examines these challenges and argues how interdisciplinary approaches constitute an enriching assembly which enables us to analyze and understand the process of arrival and settlement of Latin American immigrants in global cities. The compared study of Latin American diasporas and the media in urban environments also enables the identification of present trends. Migration and media studies function as a starting point towards identifying the critical analysis of the transnational condition among Latin Americans who reside in cities outside their region. This conceptual trailer reflects on how the concepts of diaspora and transnationalism have served as prominent research lenses through which to observe contemporary migrations. While the term “diaspora” refers to a community or group and has been widely used in history and literary studies, concepts such as transnationalism – along with transnational spaces, fields, and formations – refer to processes that transcend international borders and thus seem to describe more abstract phenomena in the language of social sciences. This theoretical and conceptual framework can serve as a foundation for analyzing and understanding Latin American diasporic transnationalisms from a communication perspective as well.

Un sistema de medios informativos sólido es crucial para enfrentar diversos tipos de crisis. No obstante, caracterizar dichos sistemas en países latinoamericanos plantea dilemas propios de una institucionalización estructuralmente débil, de procesos de modernización acelerados o en curso. Nuestro objetivo es reconocer los desafíos metodológicos en la constitución de una base de datos de medios informativos que permitan análisis consistentes y comparativos sobre las condiciones del ejercicio periodístico en el mundo.
