In this study we characterize the structure of the Quechua spoken in the different communities in the province of Sihuas, area that lies near the northeast border of Departament of Ancash, focusing on the phonological and morphological levels. The importance of this variety lies in the fact that it preserves the consonant system and certain morphological characteristics of Proto-Quechua. By examing this variety, we have discovered the preservation of the retroflex / ĉ /, converted into / č / in other varieties; the retention of the suffix / -ku / not only for the interrogative but also for the negative form; apart from other features what we will approach in the corresponding sections. These phonological and morphological traits existing only in this variety characterize this dialect as an dialectal island surrounded by other varieties that lack this particular feature. These character...

First of all, this study characterizes the structural system of the Quechua dialect spoken in the province of Santa (Ancash, Peru)), and focuses on the phonological level, the nominal and verbal morphology, as well as on aspects of its syntax (the structure of the phrase and nominal subordination). From the phonological and morphological features, it is established that this variety originates from the province of Huaylas and, that form there, it spreaded out towards the west up to its present location, in the communities in the districts of Jimbe and Moro. Secondly, we apply the methodology of sociolinguistics (through a survey) and that of ethnography of communication (the scientific procedure of the participating observation) in order to get a revealing diagnosis of the Quechua speaking community. Based on the application of this method, it is possible to determine that the variety in...

This article reports on the results of preliminary empirical research of word order correlations. Based on a small sample, the results support the Branching Direction Theory which was developed by Dryer 1992. In this work, Dryer argues against the Head-Dependent Theory. According to· this, the word order correlations reflect a tendency for dependénts to precede heads in OV languages and follow heads in VO languages. Even though the sample contains ·VO languages (Mochica and Ashaninka), the examination of the data shows a tendency to words the OV order of languages, that is, they tend to consistent direction of left·branching.

This paper attempts to elucidate the problem of the retention of non-continuous sordic obstruents preceded by the homorganic nasal in borrowings from native voices in regional Spanish or in borrowings from Spanish in the Cajamarcan variety of Quechua. The interesting thing is that the terms involved in the phenomenon seem to have come into contact with Quechua in early times and that they are also of high frequency in use. However, they are not affected by the generalized process of sonorization in this variety. This paper suggests as a plausible explanation that such terms occupy a special status since Quechua speakers differentiate between Quechua voices and those used by the dominant group. As a consequence, Americanisms and Hispanisms are not treated like native words. This fact is a reflection of the attitudes of strong attachment and loyalty to the native culture on the part of the ...
