We present the impact of dengue fever epidemic on people as well as its transmission, pathogenia, symptomatology and treatment. We explain the risks of an exposed pregnant woman to dengue fever since the possibility of complications increase. We consider the need of effective public policies in the possibility of an epidemic.

We present an update on placental physiology and placenta as a barrier, from maternal uterus modifications- a process known as decidualization, implantation and trophoblast invasion, until the placental barrier is established; we explain the different mechanisms of mother-child transfer with emphasis in the transport molecules. Finally we recall the relationship between pregnancy and inflammation as determined by cytokine expression profile and summarize the trophoblast endocrine function.

Gestational malaria is a distinct clinical entity. Due to the presence of the placenta and fetus the clinical and laboratory findings have their own characteristics that differentiate it from adults’ malaria. There are alterations in the woman's body and the placenta that affect to a greater or lesser degree to the fetus that is exposed to vertical transmission. Both treatment and prognosis are somewhat different. In this paper we present important aspects of this new clinical entity that deserves a special approach.

We present an updated review on the modifications and adaptation of the maternal organism to pregnancy, emphasizing their repercussions on complications during pregnancy. We also consider to know these modifications for therapeutic adjustments in case we need to administer medicines and drugs during the pregnancy.

Presentamos la casuística sobre Mortalidad Materna en el Hospital Regional “Cayetano Heredia" de Piura, desde el inicio de su actividad asistencial en 1974 a Diciembre 1981, abarcando un total de 7 años, 3 meses; lapso en el cual ocurrieron 72 casos de muerte materna sobre un total de 26,736 nacidos vivos, lo que nos da una tasa promedio de 26.92 por diez mil nacidos vivos. Hacemos correlacion entre muerte materna y edad,  gravidez, control prenatal; analizamos las causas que originaron dichas muertes y procedencia de los casos afectados. En la discusion planteamos algunas sugerencias que creemos deben ser tomadas en cuenta, para tratar de mejorar el nivel de salud materna en nuestro departamento.

Introducción: La ruptura prematura de membranas (RPM) es una de las complicaciones maternas más frecuentes, por lo cual se buscó describir las características clínico-epidemiológicas de la Ruptura Prematura de Membrana en las gestantes jóvenes atendidas en el Hospital Essalud III José Cayetano Heredia durante 2013. Material y Métodos: Se realizó un estudio descriptivo, retrospectivo y observacional en el Hospital Essalud III José Cayetano Heredia-Piura. La población estuvo conformada por el registro de historias clínicas de las gestantes jóvenes, de 15 a 24 años, con diagnóstico de RPM cuyo parto fue atendido en el Servicio de Gineco-obstetricia en el 2013.
