Objective: To determine the effectiveness of the manual technique of cataract surgery with small incision (MSICS) considering visual acuity, postoperative astigmatism, perioperative complications and improvement of the quality of life of patients based on vision. Methods: Observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study in patients operated on cataract with MSICS, between November 2, 2009 and April 30, 2010 in a private ophthalmological center in Lima. Demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, visual acuity (VA), perioperative complications, pre and postoperative astigmatism and quality of life based on vision (CVFV) are included. Results: 806 surgeries were performed in 591 patients. The mean age was 75 years, 304 cases (51.49%) were female and 501 (84.74%) from Metropolitan Lima. Mentoring in medical education has been fundamental since ancient times. It facilitates the transmission of scientific and technical knowledge and the development of competencies like empathy and leadership. In contemporary medicine, signaled by technological advances and specialization, mentors are crucial to maintaining the integrity and humanization of medical practice, positively influencing professionals' ethical and clinical conduct. This article explores the history and evolution of mentoring, including its current challenges, like time limitations, lack of resources, and pressure for performance that may affect effective relationships. We reinforce the need to implement structured programs and adequate training for mentors to overcome the identified challenges to ensure effective mentoring, thus preparing future professionals in technical, ethical, and humanistic abilities.

The importance of adopting information and communication technologies in medical education is highlighted, as is the need to develop educational software (ES) to teach basic ophthalmology to medical students. Objectives: To determine the need to develop ES for learning basic ophthalmology and to design and develop the educational software. Methods: An operational research study was conducted in three stages: needs assessment, design, and development of the ES. A bibliographic search was conducted in the MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, and LILACS databases, and the ophthalmology curricula for medical students from four Peruvian universities were reviewed. Following this, the design method was explained and justified. Results: It was found that, worldwide, there are limited and isolated experiences with ES related to ophthalmology teaching, and no reported experiences in Peru. The time allocated f...

Background: Formation of pterygium has been mainly attributed to exposure to the ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Other factors such as dry weather, wind exposure and microtrauma with dust particles, have been linked to development of pterygium. Objective: To determine the association between ocular exposure to particulate matter and development of pterygium. Methods: This case-control study was conducted in a company dedicated to the production and marketing of toilets. We included a total of 90 cases identified in November 2013 and 184 controls. The diagnosis of pterygium was based on clinical examination. Variables studied included age and job tenure of the participants. Logistic regression analysis was used to assess the effect of exposure on developing pterygium. Results: All study participants were male. The mean age of the cases and controls was 39.9 (SD 9.5) and 37.8 (SD 7.3) years, r...
