The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence, average intensity and mean abundance of ectoparasites in domestic pigeons (Columba livia). A total of 29 specimens were analyzed (17 males and 12 females). External surface of head, neck, chest, back and wings were examined, determining that 93.1% (14.9 ± 15.8 of total mean abundance) of pigeons were infected with one or more ectoparasites. All males and 83.3% of females were parasitized. Seven species of ectoparasites were identified, where five correspond to Order Mallophaga (Columbicola columbae [82.8%], Menopon gallinae [48.3%] Goniodes gigas [31%], Menacanthus stramineus [17.2%] and Lipeurus caponis [6.9%]), one to Order Diptera (Pseudolynchia canariensis [10.3%]), and one to Order Siphonapetra (Echidnophaga gallinacea [3.4%]). The largest number of mallophagans was found on the feathers of the wings and chest. Among associatio...

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasites and the risk factors associated with zoonotic transmission in dogs with owner in the rural town of Retes, Huaral district (Lima, Peru). A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out, where fecal samples of 47 dogs were collected and processed by simple direct methods, Willis-Molloy flotation technique and the rapid sedimentation technique modified by Lumbreras. The morphometric identification of the parasitic species was also done. The statistical analysis was performed by bivariate analysis with Chi square distribution. The prevalence of enteroparasitosis was 31.9%. Dipylidium caninum (12.8%), Toxocara canis (10.6%), Ancylostoma spp (4.3%), Cystoisospora canis (4.3%), Taenia spp (2.1%) were found. Monoparasitism was 76.7%, followed by biparasitism (13.4%) between helminths and protozoa. The feeding site ...

A necropsy was conducted in a venomus snake Lachesis muta (Family Vipiridae), originary from Satipo, Junín. This snake was 1.95 cm long, 9 years old, and was captive at the serpentarium of Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Lima. Four pentastomids were found in the corporal cavity and lung serosa. The parasites were fixed in 10% formol and cleared with lactofenol. The morphologic evaluation revealed that three of them were females (gonopore close to the end body and cylindrical body shape similar to an annelid) and one male (expanded front body and genital pore near the mouth). The parasites had 4 hooks where two of them showed some sclerotic appendixes compatible with adult forms. Females had 47 rings and a length of 8.3, 7.5 and 6.9 cm, respectively, while the male had 39 rings and a length of 3.7 cm. These characteristics corresponded to the species Porocephalus stilessi. This...
