The objective was to perform a retrospective analysis of the incidence, characteristics, use of safety devices, treatment and complications of the maxillofacial trauma caused by bicycle accidents. The sample was selected from analysis of 2986 medical records from patients treated between 1999 and 2008 by the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of the Faculty of Dentistry of Piracicaba, State University of Campinas (FOP-UNICAMP), State of São Paulo, Brazil. During this period, 757 patients under 18 years were treated, of which 220 were victims of bicycle accidents. The bicycle accidents constituted 29 % of the facial trauma. Only 1,8 % of the patients made use of safety devices. The adolescents were the most affected and the male gender was the most prevalent. 69 facial fractures were identified, being the jaw the most affected (55,1 %). The conservative treatment was used in mo...

The aim of this study was a retrospective analysis of the incidence, characteristics, use of safety devices, treatment and complications of maxillofacial trauma caused by bicycle accidents in a pediatric and adolescent population of São Paulo. The sample was selected from analysis of 2986 medical records of victims of facial trauma patients treated entre1999 and 2008 by the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Piracicaba Dental School, State University of Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil. During this period, 757 patients under 18 years were treated, of which 220 were victims of bicycle accidents. The bicycle accidents constituted the main etiology (29 %) of facial trauma. Only 1.8% of patients made use of safety devices. The adolescents group and male gender were the most prevalent in all age groups evaluated. Were identified 69 facial fractures, being jaw the most affected (55.1 %...

Facial traumas in pediatric patients show considerations that are not present in adults, related to prevalence, diagnosis and treatment. Facial fractures prevalence in children is low, ranging from 13 to 15%. This can be due to anatomic or environmental factors, such as traffic accidents, falls and sport accidents as the main ones. The choice of treatment alternative will depend on the intrinsic characteristics of the fracture, the patient’s age and teeth development stage. Thus heterogeneity along with low incidence of facial fracture in pediatric patients, and limited experience of some clinical and surgical professionals in child trauma management can be support for lack of consensus in treatment. Generally, minor age of patient have more conservative management. Fractures with minimum displacement can be treated in a conservative way, by means of máxilo mandibular fixation, observ...

The aim of this study was to analyze the chemical composition and surface topography of commercially pure titanium implants, obtained from three trademarks frequently used in dentistry. There were nine titanium implants of the following systems: As Technology, Neodent and Sistema Nacional de Implantes. These materials were divided into three groups, with three implants in each group. Photoelectron Spectroscopy Excited by X-ray (XPS) was used to determine the chemical composition, while to characterize the surface topography we used Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Titanium, carbon, silicon and oxygen were identified in all samples analyzed. Other contaminants were: silicon, aluminum, sulfur, lead, phosphorus, calcium, sodium and nitrogen. We identified impurities on the surface of all implants analyzed. We consider necessary to development more studies relating the presence and concen...

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most prevalent malignancy in the oral cavity. Because most of the SCC cases are diagnosed late, treatment has been linked to radical and disfiguring surgery, as well as high rates of recurrence and unfavorable forecasts. Currently, technological advances allow more conservative surgical treatments. In addition, new models of chemotherapy and radiotherapy significantly affect treatment and outcome of patients. However, some researchers have reported only a small improvement in the survival rate in advanced SCC, the same that continues presenting an extremely poor prognosis. SCC initial cases have a better prognosis when compared to advanced cases. Therefore, the prevention, early diagnosis and prompt treatment setting are essential to prevent premature deaths, aesthetic disfigurement and functional sequels caused by this disease.
