Maternal health is deteriorating across the world due to multiple factors including increasing rates of obesity, chronic medical conditions such as chronic hypertension, type II diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, as well as advanced maternal age by the time of conception. These factors summed to the increasing cesarean delivery rate, lack of standardization of clinical practices, and inappropriate care during obstetrical urgencies are all major contributors to the rising rates of major obstetrical complications and maternal death. In recent years, national and international health care organizations have proposed new definitions of major maternal morbidity. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines “near maternal miss” (NMM) as the series of events leading from good health to a life-threatening complication associated with organ dysfunction or failure. Conversely, the Centers fo...

The role of the antiangiogenic factors, the soluble form of the fms-like tyrosine kinase receptor 1 (sFlt-1) and the soluble endoglin (sEng), in the development of preeclampsia (PE) has been demonstratedin multiple clinical and experimental studies. These studies are complemented by animal studies, inwhich overexpression of these antiangiogenic factors leads to clinical manifestations similar to PE. Although, the origin of this disease remains unknown, genetic, environmental, and immunological factorsappear to affect the normal placental development, resulting ultimately in PE. sFlt-1 and sEng inhibitthe proangiogenic properties of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and the placental growthfactor (PlGF), affecting the normal vascular development in the placenta and the physiological vascularadaptations that occur in pregnancy. Exaggerated amounts of sFlt-1 and sEng, produced in...

The American College of Cardiology (ACC) and the American Heart Association (AHA)issued new guidelines for the prevention, detection, evaluation and management of hypertension in the adult based on a comprehensive systematic review of the existing literature by an expert review committee in 2017. In the ACC/AHA definitions, arterial hypertension is divided into stage 1 (systolic blood pressure (SBP) 130-139 mm Hg) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) 80-89 mm Hg) and stage 2 (SBP ≥ 140 mm Hg and DBP ≥ 90 mm Hg). The primary objectives of ACC/AHA are early detection of the disease, prompt evaluation, opportune management, and prevention of cardiovascular disease. With these changes, it is estimated that the prevalence of hypertension will increase between 15-20% in the United States (US) in the forthcoming years. There will also be a considerable increase in the number of women who will...

This article addresses the importance of developing an instrument that measures media competence, that is, the set of abilities to interact critically with the media. It introduces the problem of media education in the information society and argues the need to assess the skills of citizens in this context. It approaches this need from three perspectives: the pedagogical challenge that implies the little knowledge of the media competence and its little institutional formalization; the political discourse that privileges educational technology over media education; and the methodological question, analyzed from recent assessments of media competence applied in Spain, Chile and Peru, limited to the self-perception. Finally, we propose the construction of an instrument involving two features: integrative in terms of content, and innovative in terms of methodology.

This study explores the media practices of Peruvian internet users based on their self-perceived educational level. The purpose is to provide an original theoretical perspective on the formation of media assemblages, shaped by the uses and interactions of specific social groups with media outlets. Utilizing a custom questionnaire, grounded in an updated version of the Uses and Gratifications Theory, administered to a sample (n=465) of users from various age groups and socioeconomic backgrounds, we examine the similarities and differences in these media assemblages and their impact on users' agency as critical media consumers. The results reveal that the national context, characterized by technological disparities and the COVID-19 pandemic, has influenced consumption practices. The smartphone stands out as the most widely used device, valued for its immediacy and diverse content. Both les...
