Introduction: Uveitis-glaucoma-hyphema syndrome (UGH) is a rare complication of cataract surgery, due to mechanical chafing exerted by an intraocular lens (IOL) on the iris. Clinical case: We present the case of a 64-year-old man with a history of cataract surgery, who presented decreased visual acuity and pain in the right eye. The ophthalmological examination revealed signs of anterior uveitis, elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), microhyphema, and a single-piece foldable IOL in the sulcus that caused a mechanical chafing with the posterior face of the iris. The medical treatment was insufficient, for this reason a folding simple-piece IOL explant surgery was performed and replaced by a three-piece IOL. Postoperative evolution was favorable. Conclusion: We should suspect this complication in patients with a history of cataract surgery, especially in cases in which the IOL is in single-...

Introduction: Posner - Schlossman Syndrome (PSS) is a rare disease, more prevalent in men between 20 and 50 years old, characterized by recurrent attacks of anterior uveitis and ocular hypertension. Clinical case: We report the case of a 42-year-old patient with a single eye. He came to the consultation presenting decreased visual acuity, photobobia, halos around the lights, and intense pain in his left eye. The ophthalmological examination revealed inflammatory signs in the anterior segment, elevated intraocular pressure and damage to the optic nerve. Medical treatment was started with corticosteroids and topical antiglaucoma drugs, oral acetazolamide and intravenous mannitol, obtaining no response and it was decided to perform a surgical intervention (Ahmed valve implantation) in the left eye, subsequently achieving a good clinical evolution and resolution of the case.&n...

Introduction: Ghost cell glaucoma (GCG) is a very rare secondary open angle glaucoma, in which there is a sustained increase in intraocular pressure (IOP) due to obstruction of the trabecular meshwork (TM) due to the passage of ghost cells (GC) from the vitreous into the anterior chamber, after a vitreous hemorrhage (VH). Clinical Case: We present the case of a male patient with a history of vitreous hemorrhage and sustained IOP elevation in the right eye (RE). Medical treatment was insufficient, for this reason surgical treatment was required. Postoperative evolution was favorable. Conclusion: This pathology should prefer the differential diagnosis of traumatic glaucomas, correlating high clinical suspicion and histological confirmation.

Introduction: Tractional-regmatogen combined retinal detachment occurs when traction from an adjacent area of fibrovascular proliferation causes retinal rupture. Clinical case: A 56-year-old male patient was admitted with decreased visual acuity in OD, associated with myodesopsias, metamorphopsias and photopsias. The evaluation found a visual acuity of perception of hand movement at 10 cm in OD; anterior segment biomicroscopy with slit lamp showed an opacity of crystalline C2 P2 and an intraocular pressure of 10 mmHg. Optical funduscopy found an optic nerve with nasal neovascularization, decreased macular brightness, with zones of fibrovascular proliferation around the 4 vascular arcades, Detachment of the traction and regmatogen retina with 1 peripheral tear between hours 11 and 12. The ultrasound showed an ocular globe with preserved contours, with traction zones, undulating membrane c...

Objective: To know the ocular clinical manifestations in patients diagnosed with herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO) at the Carlos Alberto Seguín Escobedo National Hospital of EsSalud - Arequipa, in 2021. Material and methods: Observational and descriptive study. The population included all patients diagnosed with HZO who underwent a thorough eye examination. The data was processed and analyzed using the statistical program SPSS v24 and presented through tables and descriptive graphs. Results: 16 patients were included in the study. The average age was 73 years. 8 cases had high blood pressure, 6 cases had type II diabetes mellitus, and 2 cases had some type of neoplasm. The mean time between the manifestation of the skin rash and the search for medical help was 6 days. The most described ocular symptom was pain (62.5 %). Hutchinson’s sign was present in 12 patients (75 %), and they repor...

The neuromyelitis optica (NMO) or Devic's disease, previously defined by the occurrence of optical neuritis (NO) and transverse myelitis (MT), is currently considered as a spectrum of autoimmune, inflammatory and demyelinating disorders of the CNS. Clinical case: Patient with 2-week clinical history, characterized by abrupt decrease in visual acuity in both eyes, not associated with pain, concomitantly presents decreased sensitivity in the abdominal region and decreased muscle strength in both lower limbs, which make walking impossible. Results: The discovery of the AQP4 autoantibody (anti-AQP4) and its association with NMO, as well as differences in clinical presentation, laboratory, neuroimaging, response to treatment and prognosis, have allowed differentiating this pathology from multiple sclerosis (MS). Conclusion: The prognosis of patients with NMO...
