Recent research has changed our view on depression in important ways. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Strategic Plan for Mood Disorders Research (NIMH, 2003) is currently the most ambitious attempt to give a new impetus to research on mood disorders, and to develop more encompassing theories that will ultimately lead to more effective treatment strategies. However, in our view, this strategic plan fails to address several important issues and recent developments in research on depression. In this article, several important points of divergence are outlined with special reference to a conference on the integration of theories and treatment strategies on depression held in Kortenberg (Belgium) on March 14, 2003.

This study examines the effects of general Internal Working Models (IWMs) related to Self-Criticism and Dependency, and relationship specific IWMs related to romantic attachment, of 45 community adults on relationshipsatisfaction as reported by their partners one year later. Results showed that Dependency was positively associated with partner relationship satisfaction, while Self-Criticism tended to be negatively related to partner relationship satisfaction. Hierarchical Multiple Regression Analysis (HMRA) showed that secure romantic attachment was positively, and dismissive romantic attachment negatively associated with partner relationship satisfaction, even when controlling for Self-criticism and Dependency.

The concept of alexithymia refers to impairments in the ability to identify and communicate feelings. Alexithymia has repeatedly been linked to attachment impairments and different types of symptomatology, in particular, depression and somatic complaints. Very few studies have focused on children or adolescents when addressing this construct. Additionally, to date, there is no self-report questionnaire of alexithymia for such groups in the Spanish language. The main objectives of this study were therefore, (a) to translate and adapt the Alexithymia Questionnaire for Children to Spanish; (b) to assess the factor structure of the adapted questionnaire; and (c) to describe its reliability and validity, in a sample of N = 265 Peruvian adolescents aged 11-18 years. Internal consistency was acceptable for the DIF subscale ( α = .74), and low for the DDF and EOT subscales ( α = .55, and α =...
