A qualitative study was performed using the focus group methodology with first year university students in Greater Lima, to learn about their drinking habits and explore the main determinants of their alcohol consumption. Four homogeneous focus groups (by gender and social class) were organized, with group sizes between 5 and 9. Content analysis of the discussions revealed that the stressors experienced by these students are similar to those of other western adolescents, yet that economic difficulties and weight concerns (among females) provide additional stress. Expectancies towards alcohol were predominantly positive and partly reflected those of American adolescents (social enhancement, tension reduction and improved cognitive/motor abilities), although additional expectancies were mentioned (pleasure, diversion, loss of inhibitions, selfconfidence and group acceptance) and others w...

The aim of this study was to identify the psychological variables that predict the mental health in a sample of 1, 024 students from Lima and Huánuco. For this purpose, the following scales were used: General Self-efficacy, Coping Estimation Inventory (COPE 60), Academic Experiences Questionnaire (QVA-r), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and SF36 questionnaire. Results showed that perceived stress, the avoidant coping, the interpersonal area and study center predict mental health. The mediation analysis revealed that stress mediates the relation between the avoidant coping and the mental health. These findings of this research may contribute to the development of programs to improve the mental health in college students.

This paper main objectives are to evaluate the characteristics of tobacco and alcoholic beverage consumption as well as associated psychosocial factors in 466 adolescent freshmen in a private university in Lima.We found life prevalence and current consumption rates are higher for alcohol among male students, being beer the most consumed alcohol beverage than other spirits. The pattern of consumption of these substances is social and recreational. With regard to psychosocial aspects, similarities were found between alcoholic beverages and tobacco consumers and nonconsumers or totally abstemious ones (neither alcohol nor tobacco).Only nine adolescents, out of 466, reported that they had never consumed alcoholic beverages nor tobacco (non-consumers) and eight percent of the sample reported illegal psychoactive substance live prevalence.

The associations between coping styles, measured by COPE Test, dispositional version (Carver,Scheier and Weintraub, 1989), and Health Status inferred through a performance status, measured by Karnofsky's Index of Behavioral Performance are examined. The study focuses upon 28 oncological in patients. Positive moderate Pearson's correlations were found between these two variables in this correlational-descriptive study. These were interpreted in the following sense: the larger use of the style, the less health status among the scales suppression of competent activities, procrastination of coping, instrumental social support, focusing and releasing of emotions and behavioral disengagement. The active coping scale presented a negative correlationwith regard to Performance Status as a health measure.

This investigation aims to analyze the association between the perceived physical and mental health and the sociodemographic, academic and psychological variables in a group of 520 students from a private university of Lima. For this purpose, the Short Form- 36 Health Survey (SF-36), the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSE), the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and the Coping Estimation Inventory (COPE 60) were used. The results show that men obtained higher scores in the dimensions of physical health compared to women. Students who had less academic difficulties obtained higher scores in the dimensions of mental health. Finally, the perceived stress exhibited stronger correlations with the dimensions of perceived physical and mental health. It is expected that these results contribute to the development of programs focused on health prevention and promotion of university students. DOI: ht...
