It´s been amply proved that there is an early and determining relationship between the knowledge of academic, standard language, and a higher level of achievement at school. We also know that children belonging to lower socio-economic status face an early disadvantaged situation, which limits the maximum development of their potentialities; in these cases, it is common that, by the time they have enrolled in school, it is already too late to close the growing gap between them and more economically advantaged groups. The present university social responsibility project provided a group of public preschool teachers with scientific, evidence-based, information, regarding the relation between early vocabulary, literacy development, and its implications for good school achievement. We shared a specific intervention proposal with the teachers, for early vocabulary teaching, based o...

We analyzed the size and composition of the receptive and productive vocabulary of Spanish-speaking Peruvian children in two age groups: 8 to 15 and 16 to 30 months. We look for significant changes in size based on the age and gender of the children. Regarding the composition of the vocabulary, we consider only those items that occupy the first 50 positions as long as they are understood or produced by at least 50% of the children, and we analyze them on the basis of an exhaustive list of grammatical categories and the children´s age. Finally, we explore the existence of correlations between certain grammatical categories whose syntactic relations could suggest a parallel development, and we compare our results with those of similar studies.

We present here the adaptation process of the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories (CDI) to the standard Peruvian Spanish and the version of the inventories resulting from this process. These are a tool for the study of early communication (gestures and vocalizations), the initial vocabulary and the first grammatical constructions, for children between 8 and 15 months and children between 16 and 30 months of age. Having a version adapted to Peruvian Spanish will enhance the development of research on early development issues in our country, especially, but not only, linguistic and communicative aspects. In the applied sphere, these inventories are used to detect possible language and developmental disorders. They are, then, indispensable tools, of proven reliability and validity, to measure the communicative developm...
