The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between enterobacteria-induced endometritis and subfertility in Peruvian Paso mares. A total of 38 cyclic females, aged 5 to 15 years and raised in stud farms in Lima, Cañete, and Chincha, were evaluated. Nineteen mares were assigned to the control group (healthy), and the remaining 19 mares constituted the case group (subfertile). Uterine mucosa samples were collected on day 2 of estrus for bacterial culture and cytology using uterine brushing. Endometritis of varying degrees was diagnosed in 100% of the subfertile mares. Post-mating endometritis (PME), previous antimicrobial treatment, and the number of artificial inseminations per season were factors associated with subfertility. The main bacterial species and genera isolated were Bacillus sp. (36.8%), Staphylococcus sp. (26.3%), Escherichia coli (18.4%), Klebsiella sp. ...

Bovine subclinical mastitis is one of the leading causes of economic losses in the dairy sector due to its impact on milk quality, the increase in somatic cell count, and the reduction of productive performance. The objective of this study was to gather information on the presence and distribution of this disease, identify the bacterial agents involved, and examine the factors contributing to risk in small herds in the Montevideo hamlet of the Chaglla district, Pachitea province, Huánuco region, Peru. A total of 187 lactating cows were evaluated using the California Mastitis Test and direct microscopic count. Positive samples were processed on selective and differential media for bacterial isolation, following phenotypic and biochemical identification protocols. Statistical analysis included prevalence estimation with 95% confidence intervals and logistic regression to identify vulnerab...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the reproductive performance of dairy cows with delayed uterine involution under hormonal treatment with estradiol cypionate (CE2) and estradiol benzoate (BE2) between 36 and 49 days after parturition and a group of dairy cows with normal uterine involution. A total of 349 dairy cows with delayed uterine involution and 127 dairy cows without delayed uterine involution from a commercial farm in Lima, Peru were used. The BE2 treatment consisted of the i.m. application of 3 doses of 5 mg at 2-day interval and the CE2 treatment consisted of the i.m. application of 2 doses of 4 mg at 4-day interval. The parameters evaluated were calving-to-conception interval (IPC), services per conception (NSC), conception rate at first service (P1S) and the pregnancy rate at 200 days (P200D). In addition, the likelihood of get pregnant according to the days in lactation...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the alteration of the cellular components of the peritoneal lavage and to characterize the cicatricial remodelling, at the macro and microscopic level, produced by the experimental use of bovine pericardium xenograft (XPB) not treated as a lining of the end to end-jejunal terminal anastomosis in a canine model. Nine canines between 4 and 6 years of age, 15-30 kg of weight, and both sexes were randomly distributed in three experimental groups (A, B and C for a second celiotomy at 5, 10 and 30 days post-surgery) of three animals each, to which an untreated XPB was placed as a lining of the jejunal enterectomy. The results of the analysis of the cellular components of the peritoneal fluid showed a significant increase in lymphocytes, macrophages and eosinophils 30 days after the surgery and to a lesser extent 10 and 5 days after the intervention. In the...

The aim of this study was the evaluate the frequency and morphometric characterization of ectopic Fasciola hepatica in the lung. For this, 2066 lungs of cattle were evaluated in the municipal abattoir of Cajamarca, Peru, between July and August 2018. The lungs presenting macroscopic lesions were reviewed to determine the presence or absence of ectopic Fasciola hepatica. The frequency of erratic pulmonary fasciolosis was 3.68 ± 0.8%. Morphometrically, the ectopic Fasciola hepatica maintains a foliaceous shape, with pale pinkish to grey-brown coloration, measuring 10.36 ± 3.44 mm long and 4.31 ± 0.97 mm wide, and without evidence of oviposition.

The aim of this study was to determine the factors that affect pregnancy in recipient females of embryos produced in vitro under high altitude conditions. The study was carried out at the Universidad Nacional del Altiplano (UNA), located in Puno, Peru, at an altitude of 3970 m. 50 recipient females (nulliparous, primiparous and multiparous) Brown Swiss were used. Ovaries were collected from cows at a local slaughterhouse and taken to the UNA animal reproduction laboratory, where the oocytes were collected, and in vitro maturation and fertilization, culture and embryo evaluation were carried out. The transport time to the laboratory was 2 to 3 h. Quantitative factors such as body condition score (CC), diameter of the corpus luteum (CL) and number of parities, and qualitative factors such as the place of deposit of the embryo (right or left horn) and embryo quality, were evaluated using th...
