With the objective of evaluating the effect of formalin and the aqueous extract of the leaves of Mansoa alliacea "ajos sacha" (EAHAS) in the control of monogeneous parasites present in adults of Otocinclus affinis, parasitological examinations were carried out on 400 specimens, analyzing skin, fins and gills; the monogeneans were fixed in permanent sheets using the Gray & Wess method, and their parasitic indices were determined: prevalence, average intensity, average abundance. For the bioassay of the lethal median concentration (LC50-96h), 720 specimens were used, distributed in a completely random design, in 6 treatments with 3 repetitions, evaluating the formalin concentrations (0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2 and 0.25 mL/L) and the EAHAS (0.5, 15, 25, 35, 45 mL/L). For the efficacy bioassay of formalin and Mansoa alliacea "ajos sacha" leaf extract (EAHAS) in controlling monogeneans, a total ...

The exotic fish Trichopodus trichopterus, popularly known as gourami, is a species native to Asia, which has been introduced globally, being present in all continents of the world. This species has all the necessary characteristics to be considered a "dangerous" exotic species for natural environments, being necessary to carry out studies to determine its possible impacts on natural environments. In this context, the main objective of this study was to evaluate the populations of gourami and their possible impacts on native species in waters adjacent to the city of Iquitos, Peru. The results of the study revealed the presence of the gourami in more than 70% of the sampled premises, with dominance of approximately 30% in relation to the presence of other fish species; The stomach contents revealed the presence of food items that helped determine that this species is generalist and opportu...

The ornamental fish trade is one of the most important economic activities for thousands of people in the Amazon region. Among fish that are exported from Peru, Apistogramma sp., Cichlasoma amazonarum (Kullander, 1983) and Pterophyllum scalare (Schultze, 1823) are highly demanded in the ornamental fish trade activities. To date, in Peru, studies concerning to parasites that affect aquaculture activities are scarce, in that way, the present study registers for the first time in the Peruvian Amazonia the occurrence of Clinostomum sp. parasitizing three species of cichlids. Samples of Apistogramma sp., C. amazonarum and P. scalare were collected in a fish farming pond of the “Amazon Research Center for Ornamental Fishes (ARCOF) in Iquitos, Peru. Analyzed samples revealed the presence of Clinostomum sp. parasitizing the fins of the fish. As some species of cichlids are cultivated in the Pe...

The present work corresponds to a fish inventory, carried out between August and September 2019, in three sampling sites in the Pintuyacu stream, a tributary of the Itaya River basin, in the Peruvian Amazon. Based on 504 individuals analyzed, 117 species were identified, corresponding to 33 families and 8 orders. The most diverse order was Characiformes (65 species, 55.6%), followed by Siluriformes (31 species, 26.5%). At the Characidae family level, it presents the highest species richness with 24 species (20.5%). The most abundant species were Stethaprion erythrops (13.1%, 66 individuals), Knodus smithi (13.1%, 66 individuals) and Bujurquina peregrinabunda (6.2%, 31 individuals). Species for ornamental and consumer use were recorded. No threatened species were recorded and most were classified as Least Concern (LC), according to IUCN criteria. The present study is the first to present ...

Poecilia reticulata (Peters, 1859), popularly known as the guppy, is a small fi sh commonly confined to the shallow edges of pools and streams and also found in heavily polluted water bodies. In natural and artificial environments, this fish species can be infected by a wide range of pathogens and parasites. In the present study, we reported for the first time in the Peruvian Amazon, the infestation of metacercariae of Clinostomum marginatum (Rudolphi, 1819) in the body of specimens of P. reticulata. Between May and June 2024, fifty specimens of P. reticulata were collected from an urban stream in the city of Iquitos, Loreto, Peru. Samples were collected at the “Laboratorio de Parasitolog.a y Sanidad Acuícola” from the “Instituto de Investigaciones de la Amazon.a Peruana” (IIAP) in Loreto, Peru. Metacercariae of C.marginatum were observed embedded in the muscle tissue of 100% of...
