Between March and July 2019, 11 fish belonging to the species Cichlasoma zarskei Ottoni, 2011 (Acará), Serrasalmus aff. rhombeus Linnaeus, 1766 (Piranha), Trachelyopterus galeatus Linnaeus, 1766 (Bagrinho) and Hoplias malabaricus Bloch, 1794 (Traíra) in the Pericumã river basin, Maranhão, Brazil were evaluated. Stomach, intestine and eye samples were taken for parasite analysis. Parasites belonging to the groups were identified: nematodes, genus Contracaecum sp.; Cystacanth of acantocephala; and larva of cestoda. In this research it was possible to report new associations in the host-parasite relationship, such as the first record of the genus Contracaecum sp. in the species C. zarskei, a parasite that presents zoonotic potential when infected raw or undercooked fish is consumed. The knowledge about the parasitofauna of the fish community in the Pericumã river basin, Maranhão, Braz...

Parasites are important components of global biodiversity and among them, the Monogenoidea stands out, as parasites of fishes, commonly affecting the gills of their hosts. The aim of the present study was to analyze the presence of species of Urocleidoides parasitizing characiform fishes from the Tocantins River. During the study, specimens of Psectrogaster amazonica Eigenmann & Eigenmann and Caenotropus labyrinthicus (Kner) were collected from the urban zone of the municipality of Imperatriz, state of Maranhão. The gills of the fishes were removed and placed in vials containing hot water (65°C), and posteriorly, absolute ethanol was added to reach a concentration of 70%. A new species of Urocleidoides was described parasitizing both hosts. Urocleidoides psectrogasteri n. sp. can be distinguished by its congeners species principally by the morphology of the MCO.  Besides, the know...

Poecilia reticulata (Peters, 1859), popularly known as the guppy, is a small fi sh commonly confined to the shallow edges of pools and streams and also found in heavily polluted water bodies. In natural and artificial environments, this fish species can be infected by a wide range of pathogens and parasites. In the present study, we reported for the first time in the Peruvian Amazon, the infestation of metacercariae of Clinostomum marginatum (Rudolphi, 1819) in the body of specimens of P. reticulata. Between May and June 2024, fifty specimens of P. reticulata were collected from an urban stream in the city of Iquitos, Loreto, Peru. Samples were collected at the “Laboratorio de Parasitolog.a y Sanidad Acuícola” from the “Instituto de Investigaciones de la Amazon.a Peruana” (IIAP) in Loreto, Peru. Metacercariae of C.marginatum were observed embedded in the muscle tissue of 100% of...

Kinosternon scorpioides (Linnaeus, 1766) popularly known in Brazil as “Jurará” is a species of chelon that serves as a food resource and source of income for some families in Northeastern Brazil. In that sense, the present study aimed to analyze the metazoan endoparasites infecting K. scorpioides from the Baixada Maranhense, Brazil. Fifteen adult specimens were captured using funnel traps in flooded fields around the Aurá River, close to the city of São Bento-Maranhão. Samples were transported to the Postgraduate Multi-User Research Laboratory- Laboratories in Postgraduate Research/Postgraduate in Animal Science located at the State University of Maranhão- UEMA for parasitological analyses. The results revealed the presence of larvae of Contracaecum sp. infecting the stomach, intestine, and liver, while Eustrongylides sp. was found encysted in the musculature, stomach, intestine...
