Objetive: Impaired fasting glucose (IFG) is a reversible transitory state to diabetes mellitus. To compare IFG frequency according to the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the World Medical Association (WMA) criteria, and its characteristics in adults from Trujillo according age and gender. Material and methods: 224 male and 232 women from Trujillo, in age groups from 20 to 39, 40 to 59 and 60 to 79 years old. Clinic and biochemical assays (glucose and profile lipid blood) were done, considering IFG according ADA: 100 a 125 mg/dl and OMS: 111 a 125 mg/dl Results: IFG prevalence according ADA, adjusted by age: male 11,73; women 13,61 and total 12,64%; withouth difference by gender and increased with age. IFG prevalence according OMS, adjusted by age: male 4,55; women 2,46 and total 3,49% and increased with age .IFG according ADA had as risk factors with significative ...

Introducción: Dyslipidemia represent a primary risk factor for coronary heart disease. Objectives: Compare the effect on the lipid profile between Averrhoa Starfruit, “Starfruit” versus Gemfibrozile in Rattus rattus var albinus. Material and Methods: Arandomized study was realized. I worked with 39 Rattus rattus var albinus male; were divided in 2 experimental groups and a group control (GC). They were put under stage of preparation by 2 weeks, alter that, they were feeding with a rich fat diet (PIG) for 2 weeks; later I administered Starfruit and Gemfibrozile to experimental groups (GE1 and GE2, respectively). The lipid profile in each stage was measured and it was applied to the Test of Variance Analysis and test of Duncan. Results: The seric cholesterol level: GC basal 80mg/dL, PIG 97mg/dL, at two week 83 mg/dL. GE1 basal 84 mg/dL, PIG 100 mg/dL, at two week 72 mg/dL(p<0.05). ...

Introduction: 'Sacha inchi' is the best vegetable source supplying omega-3 (45-55 %), and it is also the main source of unsaturated fatty acids (35-60 %). Objective: To determine if there is any effect of Plukenetia volubilis Linneo ('Sacha inchi') in the lipid panel in young adults. Methods: The study had an experimental design including 28 participants who were medical students between 18 and 25 years old. They were randomly assigned into 2 groups: control and experimental, the second group received 30 grams of Plukenetia volubilis Linneo or 'Sacha inchi' per day for 6 weeks. The lipid panel of all participants was determined using enzymatic methods. Weight and caloric intake were measured at the beginning, and after 3 and 6 weeks of treatment. Results: The control group had the following lipid values at the beginning of the study were as follows: total cholesterol: 175,09 mg/dL; trigl...

Introduction: The Expert Panel on Detection, Evaluation and Treatment of High Blood Cholesterol in Adults established LDL cholesterol as the primary target of therapy. Objective: To determine the frequency of coronary risk categories and reaching LDL cholesterol goals according to age and sex in adult individuals in Trujillo.Materials and methods: 123 women and 123 men randomly selected were placed in the following age groups: 20 to 39, 40 to 59 and 60 to 79 years old. A clinical examination was performed, and glucose and lipids profile were measured using enzymatic methods. Results: Coronary risk categories were as follows: low, 73,98; moderate, 5,28 %; moderately high, 11,79 %; and high, 8,94 %. High and moderately high risks were more frequently found in the 60 to 79 year-old group (26.83 % and 20.8%, respectively, p<0,0004) and in male subjects (p= 0.045). LDL cholest...
