Objectives: Determine the level of surgical complexity of mandibular third molars (3MM) evalued by panoramic radiographs (PAN) in a public hospital in Lima and whether it was associated with sex, age, and type of molar tooth. Materials and Methods: The 3MM sample was 289 observed in 266 PAN digital of adults ≥18 years (50.2% men, mean age: 36.44±14.86 years). The eight parameters of the Pernambuco index were: age, body mass index (18.5-24.9 or ≥25), level of the occlusal plane, available retromolar space, angle of impact, root curvature, number of roots and relationship with the 2MM. Statistic analysis was performed with the chi-square, Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests. Results: The 3MM had a moderate level of surgical complexity (54.7%) followed by mild (40.1%). The majority presented vertical impaction (48.8%), dilaceration (82.7%), two or more roots (58.8%) and contact wit...

Objective: The study aimed to determine the frequency of complexity in mandibular third molar surgeries (MTM) according to the Pederson index in a radiological study of a Peruvian sample. Materials and methods: The sample was made up of 235 MTM present in 120 digital panoramic radiographs of patients from 16 to 55 years of age from a public hospital in Lima in 2019. The data collected were sex, age, tooth position, spatial relationship, depth, relationship to ascending branch, and Pederson index. Results: The MTM showed a prevalence of moderately difficult surgical complexity (53.6 %) with Pederson index (5 [5-6]), mesioangular impaction (46,4 %), high occlusal depth A (46,8 %), and relationship with the reduced class II branch (76,2 %). A higher Pederson index was associated with more age, but not with sex or position. Women presented more dystoangulation and class II relationship, men ...

Dental needle fracture during anesthetic placement is a rare complication that can cause significant anxiety for both the patient and their family. Complications may range from mild pain, trismus, and dysphagia to injuries involving nerve or vascular structures. We present a case of dental needle fracture in the pterygomandibular space following an inferior alveolar nerve block in a 3-year-old girl. The needle fracture appears to have resulted from the child’s sudden movement during the administration of the dental anesthesia. The needle fragment was located using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), and surgical retrieval was successfully performed 24 hours after the incident under general anesthesia. Dental needle fractures are complications that can generally be prevented with proper precautions. However, it is essential to understand the appropriate actions to take should this rar...

Introduction. This article summarizes the evidence-based recommendations of the clinical practice guide (CPG) for the treatment of patients with odontogenic infections (dentoalveolar abscess, facial cellulitis and cervicofacial abscess) in the Social Security of Health of Peru (EsSalud). Objective. To provide evidence-based clinical recommendations for the treatment of patients with odontogenic infections in EsSalud. Methods. A guideline development group (GEG) was formed that included dental surgeons, specialists, and methodologists. The GEG formulated four clinical questions to be answered in this CPG. We conducted systematic searches for systematic reviews and - when deemed relevant - primary studies in PubMed and CENTRAL during 2019. The evidence was selected to answer each of the clinical questions posed. The certainty of the evidence was assessed using the Grading of Recommendation...
