Introduction: Eryngium foetidum, commonly known as sacha culantro, is a plant that grows in the Peruvian Amazonian jungle, studied for its high concentration of antioxidant substances and various ethnopharmacological properties. The main goal of the study is to observe the cytoprotective and antioxidant effect of the extract from its leafs in Mus musculus previously administered with Sodium fluoride (NaF) using the Micronucleus test and the Comet assay. Methods: The extract was administrated orally in four different concentrations: 180, 360, 720, 1440 mg/Kg for ten days, at the 11th day a single dose of NaF was administrated via intraperitoneal at 20 mg/Kg. The genotoxicity study was made with mice from the strain BALB/c, using the Micronucleus test on bone marrow and the Comet assay on peripheral blood according the OECD guides 474 and 489 respectively. The statistical analysis was made...

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of administration of aqueous extract of Brugmansia arborea (L.) Lagerheim-Angel’s Trumpet-on some reproductive parameters in mammals.Male mices were treated with 70 mg/kl/cw for 7 days, where they were euthanized and its testis, epididymis and its cauda region weights where determinate; so, the sperms number and its abnormalities were accounted. The testis and epididymis tail weight fell; sperm concentration was lower than control and the abnormalities rises. These results suggest that there is a negative effect of the dose of B. arborea than would alter the fertility of the mouse.

The presence of Hepatozoon caimani in a population of Caiman crocodilus in a zoo located in Lima, Peru was evaluated. Blood samples were collected from 10 specimens of both sexes and various ages. The animals were clinically healthy and kept in captivity at the “Parque Zoológico de Huachipa”. Three blood smears were prepared per animal and stained with May-Grunwald-Giemsa 2%. Intraerythrocitic haemoparasites of the genus Hepatozoon were identified and due to the morphological aspect they were considered to be H. caimani.

This work describes the standardization of Micronucleus Assay (MN) and Comet Assay techniques used for the evaluation of the DNA damage on marine bivalves. These techniques are important because they can evaluate the early stress response caused by pollutant agents and environmental changes. Branchial tissues of Semimytilus algosus and Aulacomya ater were used for in vivo and in vitro treatments. Tissues were exposed to the mutagenetic agents Mitomicine C in concentrations of 0,02; 0,04 and 0,06 x 10-6 M and H2 O2 in concentration of 100 μM evaluated at 1, 3, 6, 24 and 48 h. Different solutions for the tissue collection and cell isolation were evaluated, obtaining more cell viability with cold CMFS pH 7,3 saline solution. Micronucleus Assay were modified in the obtaining of suspension cell, we used 0,9% Sodium citrate hipotonic solution, fixation in methanol for seconds after the spread...

The Blue-headed macaw (Primolius couloni) is considered a New World endangered parrot. Blood samples were collected from 13 captive blue-headed macaws (7 male, 6 female) housed in the Las Leyendas Zoological Park in Lima, Peru to establish hematologic reference values. Mean values for erythrocytes and leukocytes were 2608 x 103/ml and 10.11 x 103/ml respectively; hematocrit was 50.15% and mean corpuscular volume was 200 fl. The differential leukocyte count showed 64.7 and 25.3% of heterophils and leukocytes respectively. The largest and smallest diameter of erythrocytes was 11.3 and 7.0 μm respectively. Baseline hematologic ranges were established and can be used as reference values for this species.
