Descripción
Sumario:The objective of the study was to determine the population's perception about the presence of stray dogs and their control strategies in the district of Villa María del Triunfo, Lima - Peru, between January to July 2019. A survey composed of one or more multiple-choice answers was made and applied anonymously to villagers. The surveys were applied in 6 health centers located in the district. The study collected a total of 400 surveys. Among those surveyed, 51% (204) stated that most stray dogs were unowned. The main problems that stray dogs would be causing were the dispersal of garbage and littering the street with feces. Regarding the responsibility for the presence of stray dogs, the majority of respondents (296, 74%) claimed it is the neighbors' and the community's role, followed by the authorities in the municipalities (156, 39%). Surveys revealed that respondents perceived spaying to be the best stray dogs population control method (213, 53.3%), followed by the sterilization of only females (72, 18%) and the action of protectionists (72, 18%). 83.8% (335) of those surveyed concluded that stray dogs represent a problem for public health in the Villa María del Triunfo district.
