When the two paths crossed they produced a salutary historical re-examination of the discursive and institutional origins of anthropology in nineteenth-century colonial and evolutionary thought.Durante la década de 1980 la antropología estadounidense pasó por dos grandes transformaciones. La primera involucró un viraje hacia la historia. La segunda, un viraje hacia los textos. Mientras que la primera de éstas condujo a los eruditos por un largo camino hacia el entendimiento de la especificidad, funcionamiento y realidad concreta de los procesos económicos, políticos, discursivos y sociales estudiados por la antropología; la segunda recorrió un primoroso camino de auto*-reflexión y crítica disciplinaria.
