Social networking sites have had a significant impact on politics and democracy. They can bring about positive changes that contribute to establishing a more effective and complete democracy. In this study, we investigate the relationship between social networks and democratic effectiveness in Latin American countries. We conducted a quantitative and inferential statistical analysis using representative surveys from2023 to demonstrate that the internet and social networks have a notable impact on the democratization process of these countries. Our study challenges the hypothesis proposed by Lipset that a nation’s economic prosperity contributes to strengthening democracy.

The understanding of democracy as a political organization form, has in many scenarios the debate on how pure is in a representative form and how effective is when is “pure” or direct democracy, as well as thought for the “polis” or places with an specific geographic location, contrary to the Saskia Sassen concept of “global cities”. From this discussion, we can address the television as a twentieth century mass media, funded and operated by governments or private companies, exercising symbolic power in a nation, as seen by the John B. Thompson power forms in modern societies, and as an organizational form that clearly exemplifies a representative democracy from the choice of themes, characters, speech and even workflow technology. The Web 2.0 TV not only allows this massmediatic TV to migrate to a ubiquitous environment, flexible and powerful (that of cloud computing and mob...

A decade after the #YoSoy132, a student movement that gained notoriety in the global traditional and digital media agenda, is investigated the role of Twitter in the emergence of the event that meant the first relevant call to collective action in the Internet and social media era in Mexico. Based on a Bauman typology of leaders of authority, it was found among the 50 most retweeted messages that promoted the hashtag #YoSoy132, in May 2012, the presence of dynamics observed since the days of the mass media, such as agenda setting and the two-step flow theory. This points to the permanence of traditional media opinion leaders as gatekeepers who filter the information they consider relevant from the digital environment, but where there are also leaders of authority: social actors who make the collective demands visible within the current media environment.

This paper proposes to explain the perception about China and the opinion making in Western social networks. It explores the most commented news (in BuzzSumo) in 2017. Through quantitative and qualitative analysis content, shares, commented and likes are quantified; positive and negative perception indicators are measured; the most repeated words (Wordclouds.com) are selected, and the texts are analysed and interpreted. The monitoring of network users (graphs theory and Gelphi) shows the relationship among them. The triangulation of methods and sources is completed with a survey. As a result, the perception about China on the social networks varies depending on the subject and on the distance. The users show concern about the economic and military power of China, but they consider the Chinese population as peaceful, collaborative and hard-working. The social networks operate&nb...

This paper presents the key points of the analysis of three Latin American digital media: La Silla Vacía, Animal Político and Agência Pública, completed in 2015. The formats, contents and narratives were explored to characterize them as independent digital media, and observe how they transformed the practice of journalism in the region. The analysis allows to establish that there is at least one path (or a projection) for future journalism with “democratic” access conditions on the material scope, and “segmented” access conditions in the discourse. It is in addition, a path towards the multispecialization of contents and audiences that impact on the political and intellectual culture configuration. All this intersected by their relationship with the power to form public opinion and to monitor the transparency of democracy, as they themselves recognize it, it is a quality that...

This article analyses how the concept of citizenship is addressed in 15 Peruvian cybermedia platforms and how Internet users use this term on the basis of the information published, in order to know the semantic coincidences and differences in media and public agendas. This research was carried out using a mixed method which combines the classical analysis of news’ content, computer analysis of users’ comments and interviews. Among findings validated by media journalists, the little attention paid by platforms to citizens is highlighted, as well as the divergence between the approaches of the senders and users. Some solutions to the abovementioned misunderstanding in this field of unquestionable public interest that affects both public debate and the development of citizens who are aware of their roles in society are proposed.

This article studies the effectiveness of websites of Chilean deputies as a communication tool. Researchers conduct a content analysis of the entire website of parliamentarians at two moments: 2015 and 2018. A first fact is that only half of the deputies have a website, rejecting its potential as a communication tool for citizens. In addition, none of the 129 websites analyzed, 66 in 2015 and 63 in 2018, is effective in terms of digital communication, underutilizing the informative and dialogical potential of this tool. The article also provides information about the use of Facebook and Twitter by parliamentarians. In the light of the results, the websites of Chilean deputies are used in the old logic of mass communication that includes a sender and a passive public, contradicting the digital democratization that characterizes the communication of the 21st century.

Can political ads produce enough emotional shock as for orienting a person’s vote? To answer this inquiry we monitored a group of first-time voters from different universities in Mexico City during the 2018 electoral process. Through association analysis and multidimensional scaling techniques, we contrasted their emotional response to campaign ads of the three main presidential candidates with their final vote on July 1st. Our results show there is only a slight correlation between emotional reaction to political ads and the vote cast by individuals. Emotions motivated by audiovisual stimuli, have a limited effect over vote orientation, since these reactions depend upon the interpretive capitals that each voter possesses.
