Objective: To develop a narrative synthesis on polycythemia, a prevalent condition that poses diagnostic challenges in primary health care. Materials and methods: A non-systematic literature review was conducted using six databases (PubMed, SCOPUS, ScienceDirect, SciELO, Redalyc, and Google Scholar), covering publications from January 2005 to December 2024. Result: Polycythemia is an underdiagnosed blood hyperviscosity condition with high prevalence and a strong association with cardiovascular events, particularly in cases of polycythemia vera and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Conclusion: This review provides a practical approach for early etiological diagnosis and timely treatment of polycythemia. The proposed algorithm optimizes resource use in primary care and may reduce diagnostic delays, improving clinical decision-making.

The objective of this study was to identify the spinal nerves that give origin to the brachial plexus and the origin of each of the nerves of the white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), as well as to compare the results with those reported in the literature for other ruminants. The two brachial plexuses of four specimens (three females and one male) were dissected. The brachial plexus was originated by contribution of the roots of the ventral branches of the spinal nerves from C6 to T1 (3/4), and from C6 to T2 (1/4). From these originated the suprascapular, subscapular, axillary, radial, ulnar, median, thoracodorsal, musculocutaneous, cranial pectoral, pectoral caudal, long thoracic, lateral thoracic, subclavian, and dorsal scapular nerves. The origin of the brachial plexus of O. virginianus was more similar to that reported in cattle. The formation of the nerves presents similaritie...

Maternal and perinatal health is one of today’s global health priorities. Cardiovascular disease and stroke are the leading causes of maternal mortality. Placental abruption remains a critical concern for maternal morbidity because it has been associated with long-term vascular disease. However, there is neither much literature available in Spanish nor recent evidence elucidating some questions on this topic. Thus, this review aims to synthesize recent evidence on the long-term risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease in women with a personal history of placental abruption. It was found that, through complex pathophysiological mechanisms involving the structure and functionality of the placental vascular network with subsequent extension of vascular injury and production of proinflammatory and procoagulant factors which remain after delivery, major cardiovascular events are p...

The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between students’ cognitive and self-regulatory strategies, academic engagement, and academic achievement in higher education, analyzing the mediating role of reading comprehension. Different tasks to assess the constructs were administered to 209 students (Mage = 21.71; SD = 4.36). The students' GPA was used as a measure of academic achievement. Significant associations were found between cognitive and self-regulation strategies, academic engagement, reading comprehension, and students' GPA. In addition, a positive association was found between cognitive and self-regulation strategies and academic engagement. Finally, the structural equation model showed that cognitive and self-regulation strategies and academic engagement have direct effects on students' GPA. Additionally, an indirect effect of cognitive and self-regulation...
