The endoparasitic fauna of four mammal species was analyzed: Puma concolor (Linnaeus, 1771) (cougar), Lycalopex gymnocercus (Fischer, 1814) (grey fox), Myocastor coypus (Molina 1782) (coipus) and Tolypeutes matacus (Linnaeus, 1758) (armadillo). These specimens entered the Center for Wildlife Rehabilitation, Environmental Education and Responsible Recreation located in the province of San Juan, Argentina. Out of the four mammal species, three died on the spot. The necropsy of L. gymnocercus, M. coypus and T. matacus was carried out, and it was evidenced the presence of three species of parasitic nematodes: Physaloptera clausa Rudolphi, 1819 (Physalopteridae) in L. gymnocercus; Trichuris myocastoris Enigk, 1933 (Trichuridae) in M. coypus; and adult females of Aspidodera sp. Railliet & Henry, 1912 in T. matacus. Regarding P. concolor, the expulsion of nematodes was orally, determining t...

In the present study, findings regarding parasites discovered in a white-tailed deer, Odocoileus virginianus peruvianus, captured in the dry forest of the Paccha district, Chota province, Cajamarca department, are reported. The Servicio Nacional Forestal y de Fauna Silvestre recovered parasites from an adult male specimen and forwarded them to the Tropical Medicine Research Center at the Universidad Nacional de Cajamarca for taxonomic identification of helminths and arthropods, as well as coproparasitological analysis. Two metacestodes corresponding to Cysticercus tenuicollis were identified. Qualitative coproparasitological analyses revealed Nematodirus spp. eggs at a concentration of 10 eggs per gram of feces (EPG) and 40 EPG of Strongylid type that could not be differentiated due to low counts in the coproculture. No trematode eggs were detected in the sedimentation. Among ectoparasit...

Branchiurans are parasites from the buccal cavity, gills, skin, and fins of various fish species. The Neotropical region has one of the highest diversity of branchiurans. On Arapaima gigas, only four species of branchiurans have been reported. The present study improves the knowledge on host and geographical range of Dolops striata. Fish were collected from a fish farm in the State of Pará, Brazil. All A. gigas were parasitized by Dolops striata, which were collected from the fins and body surface. This is the first record of D. striata in A. gigas. The high prevalence detected warns the possibility of an increase in the number of D. striata infesting A. gigas, which may cause some problems for fish-farmers.

In order to determine the prevalence of Toxocara canis Werner, 1782, Ancylostoma caninum Ercolani, 1859 and Isospora canis Nemeseri, 1959 in street dogs at the Bogota Zoonosis Animal Shelter, seventy pooled fecal samples from cage floors were collected. Each pooled sample corresponded to one of 11 localities since the dogs were caged according to locality. Three serial samplings were performed. Each pooled sample was evaluated macroscopically and microscopically using qualitative and quantitative parasitological techniques to determine the presence of helminth eggs or oocysts. A total of 88,57% (n= 62) of the samples were parasite positive: 52,9% were positive for A. caninum; 7,1% for T. canis; 24,3% showed mixed infections of A. caninum and T. canis, 1,43% were positive for A. caninum, T. canis and I. canis and 2,9% were infected by A. caninum and I. canis. The pooled fecal samples from...

Paranthias colonus(Valenciennes, 1846) is used as fish bait replacing first class fish that have been overfished in the Gulf of California. Due to its recent commercial importance, the parasite fauna of P. colonusfrom of El Sargento, Baja California Sur, Mexico is characterized to define its role in the life cycle of its parasites. 30 fishes were fixed in 4% formaldehyde for later examination. Helminths and copepods were treated with conventional techniques specific to each kind of parasite. P. colonushad 100% prevalence and 46.5 mean intensity of parasites. Adults of Pseudorhabdosynochus sp., Prodistomum orientalis, Brachyphallus sp., Lecithochirium sp., Spinitectus sp., Caligus sp., Pandaridae, and Hatschekia sp. and larevae of Tetragonocephalidae, Scolex pleuronectis and Anisakis sp. were found. There was evidence of host specificity of Pseudorhabdosynochussp. and Hatschekiasp. by ser...

The aim of this study was to register for the first time parasitism by Hepatozoon (Miller, 1908) in two species of bufonid anurans in areas of the Caatinga in Brazil, and to present morphometric analysis on the parasites and parasitized erythrocytes. During helminthological studies on anurans from the Brazilian Caatinga in 2019, blood smears of three specimens Rhinella diptycha (Cope, 1862) and three of Rhinella granulosa (Spix, 1824) in the municipality of Petrolina, state of Pernambuco, Brazil were analyzed. To make blood smears, blood samples were collected intracardiacally or through puncturing the ventral abdominal vein. The smears were analyzed under a light microscope at 1000x magnification. Morphometric dimensions of host cells and parasites were measured. The only parasite forms encountered in the blood of the two anuran species were intraerythrocytic gametocytes of Hepatozoon s...

Many Amazonian animals are a valuable food source, for the rural and urban people of the Peruvian forest. Their meat is called carne de monte, and is the third source of protein food in the region. Podocnemis unifilis (Yellow-spotted Amazon River turtle or taricaya) is utilized for both its meat and eggs. The efforts for restocking this reptile through breeding in semicaptivity and captivity, has allowed increasing the population, and now they are abundant. However, the breeding process had not taken into account the sanitary aspect, and this information is barely known in Peru. With the objective of identifying the parasitic fauna of the taricaya, the digestive tracts of 12 females (2 adults, 10 young) captured in the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve where examined. Different grades of parasitic infection were found in all turtles investigated. The parasites identified were the nematodes...

Flathead mullet Mugil cephalus Linnaeus, 1758 (Mugilidae) is a carnivore benthopelagic fish of the central coast from Peru. We research some community components of parasitofauna of 74 M. cephalus acquired from Chorrillos Fishmarket, Lima, Peru, between August and December 2008. We necropsy fishes with aim to characterize parasite community, evaluate influence of length and sex of host on its main helminths and crustacean parasites and in addition some diversity patterns on ecology of communities and gill co-occurrence of ectoparasites more prevalents. Fishes showed a total length mean of 31,4 ± 2,7 cm. Mean abundance of infection and mean parasite species richness was 2.3 (0-32) and 0.79 (1-3), respectively. Thirty hosts were not parasited (40.5 %). Infection, with 1, 2 and 3 species of parasites were 32 (43.2 %), 9 (12.2 %) and 3 (4.1 %), respectively. Three ectoparasites were found: ...

The goal of this research was to increase the knowledge of two parasitic protozoa: Herpetomonas muscarum (Leidy, 1856) Ken, 1880 and Octosporea muscaedomesticae Flu, 1911, in Musca domestica. Both represent new records in Peru. The H. muscarum leptomonad are 36 µ long and are larger than the ones cited by other authors. O. muscadomesticae presents large and plasmodial forms slightly larger than the ones studied by Bulnheim & Vávra (1998). In the M. domestica group surveyed, we determined a significant percentage of H. muscarum (54,0%) and O. muscadomesticae (27,0%).

Thunnus atlanticus is of great commercial importance in Brazil, but infections caused by helminth parasites can reduce its commercial value. In this paper, 15 species of Digenea and three of Monogenoidea were recovered from 61 specimens of T. atlanticus collected from the coastal zone of the State of Rio de Janeiro. Species of the family Didymozoidae were the dominant species, with highest prevalence and abundance values. The parasites showed the typical aggregated distribution pattern, except for Nasicola brasiliensis, which had an aleatory distribution pattern. Prevalence and abundance of Didymosulcus philobranchiarca, Didymocystis lamotheargumedoi and Didymosulcus wedli and prevalence of Koellikerioides internogastricus were positively correlated with the total length of the host. The abundance of Coeliotrema thynni was negatively correlated with total length of the host. New hosts re...
