This paper shows how we can use the Introduction of Bronislav Malinowski’s The Argonauts of the Western Pacific in our research today, a century later. In this specific case, and going through a double commemoration in 2022, I explain the logic with which I structured an ethnographic method class in April 2021. I did so by taking advantage of a subject that was foreign enough to my students, prompting them to raise questions and to understand the structure, the imponderabilia of real life and the natives’ mentality. In my own case, the natives are the real Other of the Argentine academia: the military sailors of the Argentine Navy, with whom I tried to understand how they experienced the Anglo-Argentine conflict for the Malvinas/Falklands and other South Atlantic Islands (1982).

The work begins by carefully tracing the main historical and occupational events surrounding the Malvinas Islands, from their discovery in the sixteenth century to the problematic years of the nineteenth century when the territories were taken over colonially by England. The second chapter makes a critical analysis of the different sovereignty titles that Britain and the Argentine Republic claim for themselves on the basis of the above facts. The study concludes that the legitimate titles correspond to Argentina. Finally, extensive reference is made to the treatment of the Malvinas Islands problem in the international debate, preferably in the United Nations. Special detail is given in relation to the principles of Decolonisation, Self-determination and Territorial Integrity, as applied to the case under study.

The debate on public policies and regulations for digital platforms constitutes an urgent topic for communication sciences. This article aims to provide a theoretical-analytical approach to emerging dimensions in research on communication policies in platform capitalism in Latin America. The work is part of a critical approach to the political economy of communication, offers a state of the art and includes a bibliographic systematization of the main debates on the State, big tech and public policies. Reflections from the notions of cognitive capitalism and platform capitalism allow us to confront the instrumental theoretical approaches that characterize the study of internet intermediaries. Likewise, the paper problematizes the dilemmas posed by regulatory proposals based on a review of state initiatives and judicial decisions in Latin America.
