Media literacy, or educommunication, has audiovisual literacy as one of its dimensions. This has always been promoted for application in schools and civil society, however, there are not many studies on its application in the university setting. Therefore, this research aims to study audiovisual literacy applied in communication faculties in Latin America through the teaching of the documentary genre. A qualitative approach was used through semi-structured interviews with teachers from educational institutions in nine countries in the region. The results obtained show that, although curricula do not explicitly address it, teachers and students carry out this literacy at different levels and depths, which is why an initial typology is proposed consisting of audiovisual literacy: by genre, intergeneric, transversal, and instrumental.

Translators face numerous challenges for doing their work, not only linguistic but also multimedia-related challenges. For this reason, translation undergraduate students must develop their documentary competence with a digital portfolio. The aim of this research is to demonstrate the effect of using a digital portfolio for developing documentary competence in the translation students from a private university in Lima. This research is quantitative and has a quasi-experimental design. It has been applied to a course of direct translation for two semesters. The sample was 32 students, 16 of them for control group and 16 for experimental group. A test was given before and after using the digital portfolio, so that documentary competence can be measured in its three dimensions: thematic field, terminology and textual genres. Findings suggest that the digital portfolio is effective for devel...

This paper analyzes two documents from the Jesuit mission to Japan, both written by Luís Fróis (1532-1597). They discuss the same topic: the conversion to Christianity of a young nobleman from Bungo (Kyushu) in 1577. One is an epistle and the other deals with historic issues. The comparison reveals the peculiarities of each genre, in line with the norms of the Society of Jesus. The paper concludes that epistles were considered to strengthen spiritual and identity links, as a result of which they were widely disseminated during the 16th century.

Video games have been created on political and social issues since the beginning of this medium. In recent years, many computer developers are creating and launching games quickly in response to current events. These games are known as “newsgames”. Increasingly the number of Internet users increases using the network to consume news. Newsgames could become an important part of how people understand current events and could be an important and expressive genre of video games. Digital journalism is making the media look for new ways to tell news and interact with their audience. A journalist should use Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and implement new journalistic formats. In Ecuador this process takes time to boot although some media are putting these formats into practice as is the case of newsgames. Our work studies the newsgames that are being produced in Ecuador.

Argentinean online media have followed international trends in their digital trajectory and they have taken on the constant changes in the media ecosystem by innovating with the production of multimedia and interactive formats designed for the Internet, as well as technological initiatives such as virtual reality. From the organizational point of view, the convergence of newsrooms and the creation of labs are some of the identified features. In this article, a case study of La Nación, La Capital, La Voz del Interior and Clarín is developed, identifying its innovative elements and interviewing digital professionals. At a global level, the media of Argentina show an innovative nature, although unstable. The search for a sustainable model, the provision of economic, technological and human resources for the digital area and a strategic commitment of companies can provide what is necessary...

The film industry remains a male-dominated sector, particularly in managerial, creative, and technical positions. In this context, we explore the work of female directors in Spanish cinema concerning ETA terrorism (1977-2023) to observe and assess the contribution of women in a doubly masculine environment: film direction and terrorist violence. Within the framework of the so-called “battle of the narrative” and film and gender studies, and based on a qualitative methodology involving textual analysis of feature films and the study of existing literature, we trace the presence and voice of female directors. We investigate who they are, their number, and their contribution to cinema concerning ETA and Spanish cinema in general. We examine the stories, genres, and themes they choose and the perspectives from which they approach them. We consider both the form and contextual issues rela...

We must wait for extraordinary catastrophes like the COVID-19 health crisis to appreciate a human rights approach in journalistic information. We set out to study the journalistic coverage of immigration in Ecuador during the state of exception decreed in 2020 with an analytical and comparative method with a mixed approach. On the one hand, we collected all the documentary production to understand the state of affairs; on the other hand, we analyzed the articles on migration and human mobility published in the digital editions of El Comercio and El Universo. The results show neutral referential frameworks, no human rights approaches or inclusive language, and a preference for news headlines and genres. Articles rarely include infographics, statistical data, or transmedia elements. Finally, the analysis showed a general depersonalization of authorship, a predominance of official sources, ...

The present work consists of a photographic project that focuses on visually capturing the effects, sensations and emotions linked to a real story of child sexual abuse. It consists of 61 photographs and a documentary video essay, which are presented through a web portal. In the creation of this project, various visual treatments, photographic genres and formats have been used. The elements that are part of the exhibition are intended to be a means of visual expression that communicates and encapsulates the complexity behind this situation with respect to the identity of the victim, the profile of the aggressor and the lasting effects of this experience. In this way, it seeks to be a contribution to the dialogue around sexual abuse, offering a testimonial perspective that had previously remained hidden. It is essential to highlight the importance of approaching this sensitive topic with ...

Considering the proliferation of negotiations around global televi- sion formats, this research demanded understanding specific relationship be- tween media and music in “The Voice Brasil Kids 2018”. The purpose was to understand how the gestuality evidences gap between the children’s feature of talent show and the meanings implemented in previously determined perfor- mances. This qualitative study (with bibliographic research, content analysis, structural analysis, analysis for the viability of the essence) presents argu- ments about aspects that involve productions in format and is established by the analysis bias that recognizes the gesture as an element of communication with significant impact on the technically mediated performance. Finally, this research pointed out that the gap between the child specificity of the program and the gestures implemented in previously determined...

The continuous changes in social, technological and media dynamics have forced the communication strategies of companies to constantly change. In the current context, characterized by low attention rates, the saturation of messages and multi-screen consumption, content has become a distinctive and valuable element to connect with audiences. In this sense, the transmedia storytelling, offer characteristics that encourage the participation and involvement of the audiences to which they are directed. This research intends to make a bibliographical review to discover what the key elements of this storytelling are. The ultimate goal will be to analyze its potential for its application to communication in organizations. As a first approximation, it is worth noting that although the transmedia storytelling complies with the basic principles of relation with the public, its use will be of no val...
