When COVID-19 began to spread, environmental scientists recognized that the world faced a dangerous upper respiratory viral disease that might exhibit sensitivity to seasonal weather conditions. Many of these scientists have sought to aid COVID-19 response by studying the potential to monitor, forecast, or project disease transmission rates or symptom severity as a function of climate zone, season, meteorological variability, air quality, and other environmental parameters1,2,3,4. The rapid pace of COVID-19 research has meant that studies on this topic appeared on pre-print servers and then on news and social media outlets faster than the information could be cross-checked and peer-reviewed. As many such studies accumulated, it became clear that reported evidence was often contradictory, and in some cases studies were being selected subjectively in a manner that seemed intended to suppor...

Several anthropogenic pressures are threatening biodiversity and may increase in the next years, altering ecological processes and ecosystem services. Biological collections offer a rich source of information to develop studies of functional ecology and biodiversity conservation. Key information related to morphology, physiology and life history could be obtained through functional traits provided by specimens in biological collections. Additionally, museum collections present a great potential for document changes of habitat disturbance, using response/effect framework, functional diversity measures, and fluctuating asymmetry approaches. Despite limitations of specimens in data such as abundance, imprecisions in specimen´s georeferencing, errors in taxonomic identification and the poor preservation state of some specimens, biological collections contain vast data banks, which could be ...

In the last twenty years, the number of complete genomes that have been sequenced and deposited in data banks has grown dramatically. This abundance in sequence information has supported the creation of the discipline known as paleogenetics. In this article, without going into complex algorithms, we present some key concepts for understanding how proteins have evolved in time. We then illustrate how paleogenetic analysis can be used in biotechnology. These examples highlight the connection between chemistry and biology, two disciplines that twenty years ago seemed to be more different than what they seem to be today.

The purpose of this article is to identify socio-affective competencies linked to teamwork that are mobilized in the resolution of problem situations in the Mathematics curriculum. The study was conducted using a qualitative case study approach. The participants were 22 high school students from a public school in southern Brazil. Data were collected through the following instruments: the Competency Wheel, a socio-affective competencies questionnaire, a written teamwork report, and the teacher’s logbook. The results indicate that the socio-affective competencies openness to new experiences and empathy emerged in most teams. In addition, affective bonds and affinity were the main criteria influencing the selection of team members.

Background: Bullying is a complex problem and research suggests focusing on adolescents’ individual characteristics, as well as exploring those contexts that affect their development, such as family and school contexts, by adopting an ecological vision. Objective: To inquire into the individual factors (prosocial/antisocial behaviors) and the characteristics of family and school contexts related to bullying behavior in adolescents attending public and private schools in the city of Córdoba. Method: A test battery was administered to 3,500 adolescents between 11 and 20 years old to measure the study variables. A multiple correspondence analysis was performed. Results: Two dimensions which explain 36.47% of data variability were observed as structural axes of the representations that identify the patterns in which the roles involved in bullying are distinguished. There is evidence that ...

Women’s presence in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) has been growing in relevance, yet research on the topic is met with a lack of data for the construction of consistent analysis. The Equality for Leadership in Latin American STEM Network (ELLAS) aims to develop a Linked Open Data (LOD) platform to help fill this gap. This work is embedded in ELLAS and contributes to (1) a triplication (RDF) of the data in Inep’s Higher Education Census, (2) the creation of a methodology for elaborating ontologies, to be used within the project, that enables an analysis of the presence and permanence of women in STEM areas and (3) its instantiation in the context of Higher Education in the field of computing in Brazil.

Studies of floristic composition and plant species richness in tropical mountains support their recognition as areas of high biological diversity, and therefore of their importance for plant conservation. Here, we present data on the flora of the high Andes of eight sites centered in the Carabaya mountains, and also provide a floristic comparison with nine other floras within Peru and northern Bolivia. The study area includes 506 species of vascular plants, grouped in 203 genera and 66 families. The highest species richness was found in two families: Asteraceae and Poaceae, which collectively encompass 37% of all species. Other important families were Caryophyllaceae, Fabaceae, Malvaceae, Brassicaceae, Caprifoliaceae, Gentianaceae, Plantaginaceae and Cyperaceae. The most diverse genera were Senecio, Calamagrostis, Poa and Nototriche. Perennial herbs were the dominant growth form. The vas...

The purpose of the present study is analyzing the relations that could exist between the labour competitions and the organizational learning in teachers from Comas’ public educational institutions. A sample of 240 teachers was taken and two evaluations instruments were applied, one for each variable. The results show that significant and positives correlations exist between the variables of study, furthermore it was found that women teachers have better results in the organizational learning than men teachers.

Weather forecasts, climate change projections, and epidemiological predictions all represent domains that are using forecast data to take early action for risk management. However, the methods and applications of the modeling efforts in each of these three fields have been developed and applied with little cross-fertilization. This perspective identifies best practices in each domain that can be adopted by the others, which can be used to inform each field separately as well as to facilitate a more effective combined use for the management of compound and evolving risks. In light of increased attention to predictive modeling during theCOVID-19 pandemic,we identify three major areas that all three of these modeling fields should prioritize for future investmentand improvement: (1) decision support, (2) conveying uncertainty, and (3) capturingvulnerability.
