Qualitative research that investigates the knowledge and cultural practices of the diaguita women of the Chilean northern Chico and their relationship with ancestral medicine. The diaguita have been made invisible as protagonists of the healing processes, in an andro-centered and subalternizing treatment, which contrasts with the abundant evidence on the importance of women in the survival of ancestral medicine. The methodology was based on a feminist ethnography carried out in the regions of Atacama and Coquimbo (Chile), between 2021 and 2023, with traditional diaguita authorities. The results show the characteristics, elements and strategies used in the healing processes developed by diaguita women, also highlighting the importance of medicinal plants. It is concluded that the diaguita are carriers and transmitters of ancestral knowledge and traditional practices in a matrilineal and i...

This work focuses on indigenous communities and tourist actors in the Atacama region, northern Chile, and try to propose a model to develop a tourist offer on the Inca Trail declared a World Heritage Site. The study is part of a regional project that sought to build an innovative offer with a characteristic stamp of the territory, and found as a problem that the indigenous communities present in the area had no links with the tourism sector, however they are the ones that frequent and protect the archaeological and patrimonial sites linked to the Inca trail. The results show that the articulation between tourism actors and indigenous communities allows the incorporation of new approaches and models for the construction of supply, as in this case based on cooperativism and solidarity economy, everyday aspects in these communities that inhabit the territories of the desert.

Mining contexts involving Indigenous peoples have become complex terrains for ethnographic research, marked by a high degree of politicisation, conflict, and a dense landscape of social actors. As spaces of both encounter and dissonance, or misencounter, between asymmetrical actors, these settings demand a critically situated reflection on the positionality of the researcher, the purposes of the research, and the forms of engagement adopted in the field. This article is situated within the socio-environmental conflict surrounding the Pascua Lama binational mining project (2000- 2021), alongside the simultaneous process of political and legal recognition of the Diaguita of Huasco Alto as an Indigenous people (Atacama Region, north of Chile). Drawing on long-term ethnographic research, this text reflects on the methodological, ethical, and epistemological challenges of fieldwork in Indigen...

The study seeks to identify the sacrificial practices present in the subjectivities and corporealities of women in the commune of Tierra Amarilla, Atacama region, Chile. The commune is a sacrificial zone marked by the high presence of extractive mining companies. The notion of sacrifice, worked theoretically from different authors, gives rise to the analysis of the sacrificial practices to which women resort to face the effects of sacrifice in their lives daily. In this way, qualitative research is proposed, with a narrative and exploratory approach, carried out through a case study. Based on semi-structured narrative interviews, we inquired into the sacrificial practices developed by the participants of the study. The sample consisted of women, participants of social groups and organizations. The results revealed a series of sacrificial practices, in addition to the habituation and norm...
