The psychology of science is a field of research emerged in the late 80’s and its basic interest is the study of the conditions determining the rise and development of scientists and researchers. However, in spite of its apparent novelty, it is feasible to find background widely disseminated in the work of previous authors. One of them is R. Ross, who wrote an article in the Paraguayan journal Letras in 1915. Ross argued that geniuses’ production is one of the most valuable potentials to which a nation can aspire and has a relevance degree higher than any kind of wealth. His argument agrees with considerations related to the subjective processes leading creative inspiration, the generation of new ideas and the relations between genius and insanity, a view that fits the ideas of the Italian physician Cesare Lombroso. The article concludes that Ross’ ideas may be identified as a dist...

In Paraguay the teaching of the history of psychology began with the foundation of the first psychological department in the decade of 1960 at the Catholic University in Asunción. That first course were named History of psychological systems and the professor was the uruguayan jesuit priest Carlos Mullin. The first experiences were courses of general history of psychology that paid little attention to both the latin american and the paraguayan psychologies. The organized study of this last one began with the regular course in the History of Psychology at the Catholic University in Ciudad del Este (1994) that gathered particular information concerning the paraguayan national psychology. In 2004 a seminary named Introduction to Paraguayan Psychology was organized at the University of the North in Asunción, including a special segment on the History of Psychology in Paraguay. One of the main political events of the 20th century for Latin America was the agrarian reform. The policies implemented in its name and the various understandings of the agrarian issue unfolded from different actors' proposals for solutions. Agrarian reforms were defined as land distribution policies carried out primarily through expropriation or with market assistance. The economic and political transformations of recent decades have led social actors grouped in the peasant movement to reconsider the definition of agrarian reform. What is the agrarian reform currently needed, how does it differ from previous ones, and what productive and trade policies will be necessary for its effective implementation? After identifying "Popular Agrarian Reform" as the response of the peasant movement to current agrarian issues, this article concludes that planning policies for the agrifood system, es...

Although the first strategies to evaluate the human intellectual skills find millennial precedents in the ancient China, the attempts of measurement in the modern period began with the English psychologist Francis Galton in the decade of 1880, applying physiological measurements to estimate the human talent. At the beginning of the XXth century, the French psychologists Alfred Binet and Théodore Simon constructed the first metric scales to calculate children’s intelligence. These were later modified in the United States by Lewis Terman, who published the most known and influential review. In Latin America and other regions of the world the local adaptations took place at the same time. In Paraguay, the Stanford-Binet test was introduced in the decade of 1920 by the school teacher Ramón Indalecio Cardozo. He did not limit himself to an uncritical reproduction, but realized some modifi...

Alfred Adler was the first dissident who left the original nucleus of psychoanalysis to establish the psychology of the individual in the mid-1910. This approach expanded gradually in many countries, including some of Latin America, where the studies of reception of the Adlerian ideas are little abundant, compared to those on the Freudian tradition. The initial comments on Adler in Paraguay date back to 1941 in an article of the Journal of Paraguayan Athenaeum, written by Guillermo Enciso, a lawyer and philosopher devoted to politics and education. Enciso used several principles of individual psychology that were consistent with their interests in social psychology and the analysis of the collective life. This article examines the assimilation of Adler’s theories by Enciso, highlighting the central concepts and comparing them with the points of view of the Paraguayan author.
