The following paper presents a reflection on the ethics of ethnographic research in so-called virtual worlds or cyberworlds. based on my own experience in Second Life, there, Onverse and Twinity, issues related to transparency, presence, privacy and anonymity are discussed. Although research in cyberworlds shares some ethical problems with traditional and virtual ethnography, they present newdifficulties and ethical dilemmas during fieldwork that should be identified and analyzed from a critical point of view.

From the point of view of a contemporary Kula Ring ethnographer, this paper surveys Malinowski’s heritage, sums up the current state of Kula Ring research, and asks of the status of the ethnographic research heritage Malinowski did much to define. All recent Kula Ring anthropologists partly define themselves with respect to Malinowski’s tradition. And the results of their work over the last 50 years again made the region central to the discipline for part of the recent past. But today Malinowski’s Trobriand corpus is being redefined. New lines of inquiry are contributing to our understanding of the area. And Malinowski’s methods have fertilized other portions of our social system and branches for self-reflection. As it should be, what Malinowski helped define is very much with us.

An arduous task for the anthropologist as an ethnographer, responsible for carrying out field work, is to delimit (establish limits) and configure (give shape to what doesn’t usually have it), the abundant information that may eventually be accessed. A serious problem is finding the rationality of social processes, that is, finding the causal or concomitance relationships between the heteroclitic factors or variables that make up social processes, which are always historical. Extreme empiricism is an epistemological error, as is what is called teleology. Nominalism as an epistemological strategy and what it implies can be the way to bridge the extremes. The present text, following the brief intellectual biography of a wise man, a character of Borges, offers, helped by some fundamental theorists of the social sciences, some clues that guide to a good conclusion.

libro
