Geriatric Cardiology was born as a need for the comprehensive, individualized, holistic, strategic evaluation of the elderly, in itself heterogeneous; in conjunction with their geriatric syndromes such as frailty, cognitive impairment, sarcopenia, physical dysfunction, falls; in addition to its multimorbidity, its polypharmacy; with respect to cardiovascular diseases such as heart failure, atrial fibrillation, coronary disease, valvular disorders; ethereal population, which in many clinical trials have been excluded, and do not have a representativeness in the development of the current clinical guidelines for the correct diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of said cardiovascular diseases; Geriatric cardiology is therefore collaborative, it is multidisciplinary, it prioritizes quality of life more than longevity in the patient, based on geriatric principles with the implementation of sca...

Objective. To determine the characteristics and trend of the articles published on cardiology and cardiovascular medicine in the Peruvian context, and to understand how it has changed over the years. Materials and methods. A bibliometric study of original articles published up to 2020 by Peruvian authors in journals indexed under the category “Cardiac & Cardiovascular Systems” in Web of Science (WOS) was performed. The articles were included according to the selection criteria in the Rayyan web application and the bibliometric analysis was performed using the Bibliometrix package in the R programming language and VOSviewer. Results. A total of 159 published articles were included, and an increase in the number of publications since 2015 was observed. The most cited article was a clinical trial by Fitchett et al. and published in 2016. Miranda JJ was the Peruvian author with the h...

Cardiovascular diseases stand as the leading cause of mortality among adults globally. For decades, comprehensive evidence has underscored the correlation between infections, particularly those involving the respiratory system, and an elevated risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events, as well as all-cause mortality. The mechanisms through which infections heighten cardiovascular events are intricate, encompassing immune system activation, systemic inflammation, hypercoagulable states, sympathetic system activation, and increased myocardial oxygen demand. Respiratory infections further contribute hypoxemia to this complex interplay. These mechanisms intertwine, giving rise to endothelial dysfunction, plaque ruptures, myocardial depression, and heart failure. They can either instigate de novo cardiovascular events or exacerbate pre-existing conditions. Compelling evidence supports...

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is a frequent and overlooked medical condition that represents a great challenge for diagnosis and treatment. Current data shows a temporal trend towards a higher prevalence of HFpEF, even above heart failure with reduced ejection frac- tion (HFrEF). The pathophysiology of HFpEF is heterogeneous and involves several factors such as genetics, lifestyle, and cardiac and non-cardiac comorbidities. These factors result in remodeling, maladaptation and cardiac stiffness, that later on cause dyspnea, exercise intolerance, and fatigue. Although the mortality outcome of HFpEF is as high as HFrEF, no speci c therapy has demonstrat- ed overall bene t in these patients; which is why future therapies will bet on an individualized approach according to the patients phenotype.

Objective. To evaluate the self-perception of cardiology residents in Argentina regarding their abilities to help their patients stop smoking, as well as their opinions about their knowledge and skills in this area. Materials and methods. A cross-sectional study was carried out using secondary data from a study carried out in five Latin American countries and Spain, focusing on the information provided by cardiology residents in Argentina. Discrete variables were expressed as median and interquartile range, and categorical variables were expressed as percentages, and were analyzed using the chi-square test or Fisher’s exact test, depending on the relative frequency of the expected values. Results. 447 residents participated; 87.5% routinely provided brief advice to quit smoking, and 11.6% used validated questionnaires to assess the degree of addiction. Furthermore, 32.1% stated that th...

Objective. The objective of the study was to describe the clinical characteristics and the evolution of the severity of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and the degree of renal failure. Material and methods. A retrospective observational study was carried out in which the physical and electronic medical records of 60 patients older than 18 years with a diagnosis of pulmonary arterial hypertension were analyzed. Results. In our study, 11.4% of the severe PAH group worsened renal function at six months, and 13.6% of the participants worsened it at one year. In contrast, in the group with moderate PAH, 18.8% worsened at six months, and 12.5% worsened at one year. Also, the GFR at one year was 54.15 mL/min/1.73 m2 in the moderate PAH group and in the severe PAH group was 73.55 mL/min/1.73 m2. Conclusion. The results of this research suggest that the deterioration of kidney function is r...

Myocardial infarction is one the most important causes of admission and death at the Department of Cardiology of "Edgardo Rebagliati Martins" Hospital. This study reviews the complications of 536 patients admitted to our deoartment with the diagnosis of Q wave acute myocardial infarction from 1989 to 1993. Out of these, 234 patients (43.6%) had a complication, in 45 cases it was fatal, and total mortality was 8,4%. Pump failure was the most frequent complication, occurred in 106 cases (19,7%), and turned to cardiogenic shock in 28 patients (5,2%). Sinus tachycardia was the most frequent arrhytmia, in 152 cases (28,3%), followed by sinus bradycardia with 88 cases (16,4%), premature ventricular contractions in 58 cases (10,8%), atrial fibrillation in 40 cases (7,5%) and ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation in 8 (1,5%) and 9 cases (1,6%) respectively. Is at this paper "quant...

The epidemiologic transition theory, since it was first proposed, gave an intellectual boost to understanding the changing dynamics of epidemiologic profiles. The epidemiologic transition provided a complement to the discourse of demographic change. Despite its criticisms and revisions, it is still a useful concept that influences public health debates, and has proved to be influential, particularly in changing societies. Most countries are facing the rapidly emerging needs of populations
