Encont...

The loss of biodiversity and species is one of the greatest contemporary challenges for the Earth system. Nowhere are these current losses as great as in tropical forests. However, an important part of the concerns about the state of biodiversity are based on the possible negative impacts on the ecosystem services that humans enjoy. Against this anthropocentric bias when evaluating the relevance of biodiversity loss, this thesis focuses its attention on other non-human forms of life threatened by anthropogenic pressures. In this way, it aims to respond to what are the drivers of the threat of extinction of mammals and birds in the tropics. The results underline the overall importance of geographic characteristics above other socioeconomic predictors. All models presented the insular factor as the most important element in advancing the risk of extinction of both mammals and birds. Contin...

Land abandonment and forest succession in the Polish Carpathians have led to varied impacts on the landscape, from biodiversity benefits to the loss of sociocultural agricultural practices. This study investigates the impacts of land abandonment and forest succession in the Polish Carpathians, focusing on forest regeneration and wolf repopulation from 1970 to 2013. The relationship between increasing forest cover and interface areas is examined. Wild-Urban (WUI), evaluating whether this forest growth provides suitable habitats for wolves. The research contemplates the interaction between forest expansion and human presence, highlighting how the proliferation of human settlements affects the suitability of habitats for large carnivores. Connectivity analyzes and optimal path algorithms are used to determine the interconnection between potential wolf habitats and WUI areas, thereby address...

This study aims at systematizing and integrating research findings about Future Time Perspective (FTP) in Peruvian educational contexts. FTP is a motivational psychological variable that allows explaining the present behavior, considering goals set in the future. The construct demonstrated its theoretical and empirical strength in different contexts. During the second half of the XXth Century Nuttin and Lens (1985) applied the variable in different fields, especially the educational one. Their proposal considered the cognitive and motivational properties of FTP; its density, extension and level of realism was then reported. Empirical research has been conducted to date under this theoretical background; however, a decade ago this concept was redirected to a multidimensional proposal conceptualized as Future Orientation (FO) considering three components: motivational, cognitive and beha...

Wildfires are part of the socio-ecological history of fire-prone territories such as Mediterranean Europe. However, during the las decades, the increasing severity of wildfires due to socio-environmental factors have revealed the vulnerability of these socio-ecological systems (SESs) in the face of global environmental change, revealing the need to increase resilience in the face of wildfires. In contrast to the well stablished wildfire suppression policies, which in the long term have resulted in fuel build-up and larger wildfires, increasing literature suggest focussing on wildfire prevention. Among the potential measures, fostering extensive grazing is on strategy that is gaining visibility in fire-prone territories such as Spain, where the activity has been traditionally carried out but currently is showing an abandonment tendency. Widespread research has been done on the ecological ...

Domestic laws and policies around the world remain reluctant to fully guarantee intersex children’s human rights during forced and coercive surgeries performed on their bodies. The right to identity has evolved as a human right but has not been the main academic concern regarding these practices. Therefore, the present study first establishes the issues involved with forced and coercive surgical interventions on intersex children based on an intersectional and gender-based approach. Then, the evolution of the right to identity is presented through international human rights instruments as well as its link to other human rights related to the central problematic of the study. Lastly, based on international obligations regarding the child’s right to identity (Article 8 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child), several new international standards emerge from the production of the C...

People’s self-perception biases often lead them to see themselves as better than the average person (a phenomenon known as self-enhancement). This bias varies across cultures, and variations are typically explained using cultural variables, such as individualism versus collectivism. We propose that socioeconomic differences among societies—specifically, relative levels of economic inequality—play an important but unrecognized role in how people evaluate themselves. Evidence for selfenhancement was found in 15 diverse nations, but the magnitude of the bias varied. Greater self-enhancement was found in societies with more income inequality, and income inequality predicted cross-cultural differences in self-enhancement better than did individualism/collectivism. These results indicate that macrosocial differences in the distribution of economic goods are linked to microsocial processe...
