description La presente investigación tiene como objetivo explorar la experiencia subjetiva de maternidad en mujeres trabajadoras de Lima Metropolitana. Se realizó un estudio empírico cualitativo de diseño fenomenológico a través de entrevistas a profundidad, con una muestra de 8 madres primerizas de entre 26 a 38 años, que en el momento de la investigación se encontraban laborando de manera dependiente y fuera del hogar. Los resultados han sido organizados desde el análisis temático permitiendo comprender la maternidad desde la experiencia cotidiana y personal de cada madre. Se pudo apreciar que las participantes vivieron su maternidad como un proceso ambivalente permanente. Por un lado, las entrevistadas enfatizaron en el sentimiento de felicidad que el ser madre traía a sus vidas, y por otro lado, se encontraron con miedos y dificultades que esta experiencia les implicaba. Uno de los hallazgos más relevantes es que estas madres expresaron su miedo a fracasar en el cumplimiento de su función materna y llegar a ser consideradas como malas madres en comparación a las expectativas sociales. Además, se encontró que en ellas vive el temor de no poder cumplir con el ideal social sobre la labor materna. Si bien existen cambios en el posicionamiento de la mujer en la sociedad y ellas lo actúan al generarse un proyecto de vida propio más allá de la maternidad, internamente continúa en ellas vigente el mandato social sobre que la mujer tiene que cuidar el hogar y los hijos además de seguir trabajando.

A qualitative empirical study of phenomenological design was conducted through in-depth interviews, with a sample of 8 new mothers between 26 and 38 years old, who at the time of the investigation were working in a dependent manner and outside the home. The results were organized from the thematic analysis and allowed to understand motherhood from the daily and personal experience of each mother. It was obtained that the participants lived their motherhood as a permanent ambivalent process. On the one hand, the interviewees emphasized the feeling of happiness that being a mother brought to their lives, and on the other hand, they encountered fears and difficulties that this experience implied. One of the most relevant findings is that these mothers expressed their fear of failing to fulfill their maternal function and becoming considered as bad mothers compared to social expectations. It was found then that the fear of not complying with the social ideal of maternal labor coexists in them.
