Debido a ello, los fraudes informáticos por suplantación de identidad mediante huellas dactilares falsas representan una problemática creciente en instituciones bancarias. Se estima que las pérdidas alcanzan millones de soles anuales, con casos que involucran entre el 5% y el 12% de los delitos financieros reportados en algunos países. Estas pérdidas están asociadas directamente en restitución a clientes afectados, multas y sanciones impuestas por la SBS, y fuertes inversiones en ciberseguridad y equipos antifraude. A continuación, se describe el caso de una entidad financiera como tenía implementada el proceso de autenticación de sus clientes mediante la biometría dactilar. Se tiene una aplicación web la cual es un web component, que es consumido por varias aplicaciones operativas y transaccionales que se usan actualmente para la atención de los clientes en todas las agencias del banco. Este web component tiene una backend, el cual tiene servicio que se encargan de consultar las mejores huellas de RENIEC, por el DNI de la persona, si la persona visita es por primera vez al banco, la validación de la huella se realiza en RENIEC, si esta validación es exitosa la huella se guarda en la base datos del banco, así en la siguiente validación de la huella ya no se hace en RENIEC, sino en el motor biométrico del banco. En este proceso se realizaros varias suplantaciones de clientes mediante mecanismos que vulneraban la lectura de huella viva del cliente y pasaban de manera exitosa la autenticación, y podían realizar diversas operaciones y transacciones que afectaban directamente al cliente. Es por esta razón que el negocio del banco nos pasó el requerimiento de poder mejorar este proceso y mitigar el porcentaje de fraudes por suplantación de clientes usando huellas falsas, y también poder alertar al área de fraudes de posibles suplantadores.

As a result, cyber fraud involving identity theft through forged fingerprints represents a growing problem for banking institutions. Losses are estimated to reach millions of soles annually, with cases accounting for between 5% and 12% of reported financial crimes in some countries. These losses are directly associated with restitution to affected clients, fines and penalties imposed by the SBS (Superintendency of Banking, Insurance and Private Pension Fund Administrators), and significant investments in cybersecurity and anti-fraud equipment. The following describes the case of a financial institution and how it implemented its client authentication process using fingerprint biometrics. It uses a web application, a web component, consumed by several operational and transactional applications currently used to serve clients across all bank branches. This web component has a backend that provides a service responsible for querying the best fingerprints from RENIEC (the Peruvian National Registry of Identification and Civil Status) using the person's ID number. If it's the person's first visit to the bank, fingerprint validation is performed by RENIEC. If this validation is successful, the fingerprint is saved in the bank's database. Subsequent fingerprint validations are then performed by the bank's biometric engine, not RENIEC. During this process, several customer impersonations occurred using mechanisms that compromised the live fingerprint reading system, successfully passing authentication and allowing the perpetrators to carry out various operations and transactions that directly affected the customer. For this reason, the bank requested that we improve this process to mitigate the percentage of fraud related to customer impersonation using fake fingerprints, and also to alert the fraud department to potential impersonators. The cases were analyzed, and a new process was implemented. This included an initial verification to determine if the customer was digital. The validation process consisted of the standard fingerprint verification, and an additional step was to send an OTP code via SMS or email to the customer. This code had to be entered to complete the customer authentication process. If the customer was not digital, a double validation process was implemented, using two fingerprints from each hand.
