To obtain the data are used as instruments: a format of pretest and posttest of the level of knowledge and practices of family caregivers on elder care autovalente essential, consisting of 18 questions valid and reliable, considering the rights applied of anonymity, voluntary participation and confidentiality. Data processing was performed using SPSS FOR WINDOWS Version 17; the results are presented in tables of absolute and relative frequency percentage. The statistical analysis reported educational program effectiveness by analyzing the test of "Student's t" for the comparison of means for independent and paired samples to examine changes before and after the implementation of the program, with high statistical significance level. Keywords: Nursing Education Program - Family Caregivers - Elderly autovalente - Basic CareEl presente estudio de investigación es de tipo cuasi-experimental y de diseño de contrastación de pre y post test, se realizó en el Centro Poblado del Alto Trujillo durante los meses de noviembre 2012 a mayo del 2013, con la finalidad de determinar la efectividad del programa educativo en el nivel de conocimiento y prácticas de cuidado esencial del adulto mayor autovalente. La muestra estuvo constituida por 25 cuidadores, que fueron designados en forma aleatoria, y que conformaron el grupo experimental. Para la obtención de los datos se utilizó como instrumentos: un formato de pre test y post test del nivel de conocimiento y prácticas de los cuidadores familiares sobre cuidados esencial del adulto mayor autovalente, que constan de 18 preguntas válidos y confiables, aplicados considerando los derechos de anonimato, libre participación y confidencialidad. El procesamiento de datos se realizó utilizando el paquete estadístico SPSS FOR WINDOWS Versión 17, los resultados están presentados en tablas de frecuencia absolutas y relativas porcentuales. El análisis estadístico reportó la eficacia del programa educativo, analizando con la prueba de “t de student” para la comparación de medias para muestras independientes y relacionadas para examinar los cambios antes y después de la aplicación del programa, con un nivel de significancia estadísticamente alta.
