ABSTRACT In this research, the influence of economic growth on the degree of inequality in the distribution of income in Latin America is quantified. A sample of 13 countries has been selected for the study: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic and Uruguay. The indicator of economic growth corresponds to the GDP per capita and the indicator of the degree of inequality of the income distribution within each Latin American country corresponds to the Gini coefficient. An econometric regression of data panel, with fixed effects, is used, taking annual data for the period 2001-2016. The results point to an inverse relationship between economic growth and the Gini coefficient, that is to say, higher economic growth reduces the inequality in the distribution of income.
