Departamento Académico de BiologíaLa formación de una ooteca o estuche de huevos es una de las características más distintivas observadas en el Orden Mantodea y una sinapomorfia para el Superorden Dictyoptera (ordenes Blattodea, Isoptera y Mantodea). Mientras que la ooteca de los Blattaria e Isoptera ha sido objeto de estudios detallados, pocos estudios se han realizado en la ooteca de los Mantodea. Con el fin de verificar la utilidad de la ooteca como un carácter taxonómico en Mantodea, se estudió y describió las ootecas de 43 especies de mántidos Neotropicales. Las observaciones realizadas indican que la ooteca de los mántidos presenta una considerable variación en su estructura. Rasgos tales como la posición de fijación y el área de emergencia, así como la forma, textura, color y organización interna, todas presentan caracteres que son distintivos de la ooteca de cada taxón estudiado. Se discute la utilidad de la ooteca como un carácter taxonómico en Mantodea y se propone un sistema de descripción para la ooteca.The formation of an oothecae or egg case is one of the most distinct characteristics observed in the Order Mantodea and a synapomorphy for the Superorder Dictyoptera.Whereas the oothecae has been subject of detailed studies in the other dictyopteran orders (Blattaria and Isoptera), few studies have been done in Mantodea. In order to verify the utility of the oothecae as a taxonomic character in Mantodea, oothecae of 43 Neotropical mantid species were studied and described. The observations indicate that the mantodean oothecae show considerable variation in their structure. Features such as the position of the attachment and emergence area, as well as the shape, texture, color and internal organization all present characters that are distinctive of the oothecae of each taxon studied.
