description Objetivo: el objetivo de la investigación fue reunir y analizar estudios previos sobre características, actividad farmacológica y efectos terapéuticos de los aceites esenciales en forma de nanoemulsiones y nanoemulgeles, específicamente en el tratamiento de diversas afecciones bucales. Método: la metodología empleada en este estudio se basó en una revisión bibliográfica exhaustiva. Se realizó una búsqueda en bases de datos reconocidos, se determinaron criterios de inclusión y exclusión. De un total de 390 registros iniciales, se eligieron 13 estudios que cumplieron con los criterios, abarcando diversos tipos de ensayos. Resultados: los resultados indican que los aceites esenciales extraídos de plantas medicinales presentan una variedad notable de efectos beneficiosos para el tratamiento de enfermedades bucales. Las formulaciones nanotecnológicas, son efectivas para mejorar la solubilidad y estabilidad de estos aceites esenciales, optimizadas con surfactantes u otros fármacos que, mejoran la permeabilidad tisular, facilitando una liberación controlada del principio activo. Conclusión: el estudio resalta que las formulaciones nanotecnológicas, representan una alternativa valiosa para el tratamiento de enfermedades bucales. A pesar de los desafíos asociados a su uso, como la solubilidad y estabilidad, estas innovaciones ofrecen mayor permeabilidad y difusión lo que permite una mejor administración de los principios activos.

Method: the methodology used in this study was based on an exhaustive literature review. A search was carried out in recognized databases, inclusion and exclusion criteria were determined. From a total of 390 initial registrations, 13 studies that met the criteria were chosen, covering various types of trials. Results: the results indicate that essential oils extracted from medicinal plants present a notable variety of beneficial effects for the treatment of oral diseases. Nanotechnological formulations are effective in improving the solubility and stability of these essential oils, optimized with surfactants or other drugs that improve tissue permeability, facilitating a controlled release of the active ingredient. Conclusion: the study highlights that nanotechnological formulations represent a valuable alternative for the treatment of oral diseases.
