Se le denomina también dentición temporal, de leche o infantil ya que, serán sucedidos por la dentición permanente, dando a los padres la idea errónea de que éstos dientes son útiles sólo durante un periodo corto de tiempo, siendo una función de vital importancia para el odontopediatra insistir en la necesidad de su cuidado y orientarlos hacia la cultura de conservación estos dientes hasta que su periodo de rizólisis concluya. Las propiedades físicas de la dentición decidua, son semejantes a las que presentan las estructuras de los dientes permanentes. La dureza del esmalte y la dentina de los dientes primarios son ligeramente inferiores a la de los dientes permanentes. De igual forma, presentan un menor grado de mineralización en comparación con los permanentes, esto relacionado con el menor tiempo disponible para la calcificación de estos tejidos. Las raíces de los dientes primarios son más cortas, las cámaras pulpares son grandes y existen amplios conductos radiculares.
