Se desarrolló una investigación cuantitativa, transversal y retrospectiva con 138 gestantes con parto pretérmino. La mayoría presentó exceso de peso antes del embarazo, predominando el sobrepeso y la obesidad. El análisis estadístico evidenció una asociación significativa entre ambas variables, obteniéndose un valor de Chi-cuadrado de 46.229 (p < 0.001). Asimismo, la correlación de Spearman fue de 0.465 (p < 0.001), lo que indica una relación positiva moderada entre el IMC pregestacional y la severidad de la prematuridad. La delgadez no mostró relación con la gravedad del parto prematuro, mientras que el sobrepeso se vinculó mayormente con prematuridad tardía. En contraste, la obesidad presentó una asociación marcada con grados más severos de prematuridad, concentrando los casos moderados y muy prematuros.
