As a comparative reference, the paper delves into the origin and controversies on antitrust in the U.S. and post-war Germany. In contrast to these experiences, we show that competition rules in Peru were adopted without further discussion of their nature and objectives, ignoring the serious consequences of an excessive concentration of economic power on democracy and social order.El texto examina el origen y concepción de las políticas de libre competencia en el Perú, poniendo de relieve el contexto histórico, los principios teóricos, motivaciones, valores e intereses que explican su adopción desde fines de 1991. Como referencia comparativa se expone el origen y las controversias sobre el antitrust en EE.UU. y en Alemania de la posguerra.
