This study presents a description of vowel devoicing in Bogotá Spanish and investigates the role of potential factors, including linguistic, sociolinguistic, and stylistic variables. The results show that speakers pronounced vowels as partially devoiced, completely devoiced, or apparently elided. In addition, the analysis revealed that stress, consonantal context, and utterance position are factors strongly related to vowel devoicing. These findings suggest that phonetic reduction studies shed new light on the pronunciation of American Spanish and enhance our understanding of the phonological development of Spanish language.Las vocales áfonas o ensordecidas son un rasgo fonético del español americano bien documentado. Estas realizaciones (también conocidas como vocales caedizas) son el resultado de la influencia de las obstruyentes sordas y, particularmente, de la sibilante /s/. Este artículo presenta una descripción fonética del ensordecimiento vocálico en el español hablado en Bogotá e investiga qué factores lingüísticos, sociolectales y estilísticos favorecen su aparición. Los resultados muestran que las vocales caedizas tienen realizaciones parcialmente ensordecidas, completamente áfonas o aparentemente elididas. Adicionalmente, el análisis indica que el ensordecimiento depende principalmente de la tonicidad, del entorno consonántico y de la posición de la vocal dentro del grupo fónico.
