Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of the sterilization process for surgical instruments through residual microbiological analysis of their surfaces. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted in which 100 samples of dental instruments used in dental surgery were collected. The samples were classified into four groups: 25 explorers, 25 mouth mirrors, 25 round diamond burs, and 25 cylindrical diamond burs. Samples were obtained through random sterile swabbing of instruments used by undergraduate dentistry students at a private pre-professional practice clinic. The association between instrument type and the presence of contamination was evaluated using the chi-square test with a significance level of 0.05. Statistical analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), version 25. Results: Microbial contamination was detected in 14% of the samples, characterized by the presence of Gram-positive cocci. No statistically significant association was observed between the type of instrument and the presence of contamination (p>0.05). Conclusions: The findings highlight the importance of correctly implementing disinfection procedures prior to the sterilization process of dental instruments in order to ensure effective microbial elimination.

Entre los métodos más utilizados para la desinfección y esterilización del instrumental se encuentran los detergentes enzimáticos y la autoclave, en donde es fundamental el adecuado control de temperatura para la eliminación de microorganismos y esporas. Objetivos: Evaluar la efectividad del proceso de esterilización del instrumental de operatoria mediante el análisis microbiológico residual en sus superficies. Materiales y Métodos: Se realizó un estudio observacional, transversal; en el que se recolectaron 100 muestras de instrumental odontológico empleado en operatoria dental. Las muestras se agruparon en cuatro categorías:  25 exploradores, 25 espejos bucales, 25 fresas diamantadas redondas y 25 fresas diamantadas cilíndricas. La obtención de muestras se efectuó aleatoriamente mediante hisopado estéril sobre instrumental perteneciente a estudiantes de pregrado de Odontología en una clínica privada de prácticas pre-profesionales. Para evaluar la asociación entre el tipo de instrumental y la presencia de contaminación, se utilizó la prueba de chi cuadrado con un nivel de significancia de 0,05. El análisis estadístico se realizó con Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) v25. Resultados: Se identificó contaminación en el 14% de las muestras, caracterizada por la presencia de cocos Gram positivos. No se evidenció la presencia de bacilos Gram negativos ni de levaduras (p>0.05).
