Samplingfollowed the guidelines designated in the Animal Population Characterization guide of the Pan American Foot-and-Mouth Disease Center, which were intended for the residents of the district and should be distributed by surveyors whowere properly trained, and registered their signature at the end of the survey. Th e instrument used was validated by theexpert evaluation method, having as representatives of MINSA (Ministry of Health), DIGESA (General Directorate ofEnvironmental Health), and professors of the Ricardo Palma University (URP), Lima, Peru. For the estimation of thedogs, the data of the population census of the INEI (National Institute of Statistics and Informatics), Lima, Peru, wasused. Th e survey was conducted between October and December 2016. It was seen that the percentage of householdswith dogs was 53% and the average number of dogs per household of 1.25. Th e ratio of person: dog was 4.98: 1. Th eestimate of dogs reached 17,081. Th e ratio of males and females was 1.06, determining 51.4% of the cases as malesand 48.6% females. 94.95% have a companion function. Th e birth rate was calculated at 19.1%, the general fertility at52.7% and the average litter size was 3.04 off spring. Th e data presented are intended to favor the programs related to theresponsible possession of dogs as the basis for future studies.

Se desarrolló por medio de encuestas como instrumento de recolección de datos.El muestreo siguió las pautas designadas en la guía de Caracterización de Población Animal del Centro Panamericano deFiebre Aftosa, las que fueron destinadas a los residentes del distrito debiendo ser distribuidos por encuestadores los quefueron debidamente capacitados, y registraron su firma al finalizar la encuesta. El instrumento usado fue validado porel método de evaluación de expertos, teniendo como representantes a funcionarios de MINSA (Ministerio de Salud),DIGESA (Dirección General de Salud Ambiental), y docentes de la Universidad Ricardo Palma (URP), Lima, Perú.Para la estimación de los canes se utilizó los datos del Censo de población del INEI (Instituto Nacional de Estadísticae Informática), Lima, Perú del 2007. La encuesta se realizó entre octubre y diciembre del 2016. Se evidenció que elporcentaje de viviendas con perros fue de 53% y una media de perros por vivienda de un 1,25. La relación de persona:perro fue de 4,98:1. El estimado de canes llego a 17.081. La relación de machos y hembras fue de un 1,06, determinandoel 51,4% de los casos como machos y 48,6% hembras. El 94,95% cumple una función de compañía. La tasa de natalidadfue calculada en 19,1%, la fertilidad general en 52,7% y el tamaño de camada promedio fue de 3,04 crías.
